Thinking about moving SOuth - anyone who can provide suggestions?

Posted on 10/15/2013 9:47:23 PM PDT by freedom462

So I am thinking of simply leaving the job I work at now and heading to a Southern state, Texas, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Northern Florida, Tennessee, etc since I figure that, since I am one of those who does not have a reliable source of family aid of any kind, that this could be my only option.

I am considering finding a church that has a sort of communal living situation, a farm, ranch, factory or other such source that could use additional workers and join one of them. I am thinking of it in light of a situation where there is such severe disaster than there are no jobs in the schools, restaurants - presuming they'd be out of business since noone could eat out anymore, malls, universities, hospitals, not to mention no engineering jobs of any kind either, unless they required another degree (which in theory I would not get since all the schools would no longer have any money).

So I am thinking of places such as what I listed above as places to start a new life in preparation for the possibility that all other work options are simply gone because the crisis got so severe and as a way to ensure I can have a community I can survive with, since my only other option would be to try and survive as a homeless person at this point.

Does anyone on FR have a sort of church based or other type of communal living situation, a farm, ranch or non federal park that is looking for new members and/or can suggest ways I can find that type of place to work so that I have survival chance? I figure that most likely, noone would be able to help that much but knowing what I do about FR, I figured might as well ask just for the heck of it if nothing else since my options otherwise are highly limited.

Here, here, boatbums!

Tuck into the Bible and ask the Lord what he would have you do.

Ah of course, one of Clinton’s greatest hits, and man, it is easy to forget just how many there were. Maybe if not for that communal living could have made a slight comeback.

One of my favorite China stories is about when I had just moved to China and the country was celebrating the Chinese New Year, two months ahead of schedule. I had a few beers at a Muslim restaurant where I was eating delicious Chinese pok BBQ. As I walked out, I see a group Chinese with Arabic features. They were holding sticks of dynamite, lit them and threw them in the air. This occurred during the beginning stages of the Arab Spring in the Middle East.

Well during that evening. Hordes of Chinese come out of their homes and they start throwing sticks of dynamite in the air. I’m thinking, OMG the revolution in China has not been televised and I’ll be lucky to live through the night.

Well I survived and the next morning I asked my coworkers about it and they just laughed and said, “Welcome to China and Happy Chinese New Years to you.” It turns out that the Chinese love firecrackers, and their favorite activity is to throw sticks of dynamite in the air. And each year, a few people die and some lose their hands due to dynamite explosion mishaps. They claim that dynamite brings good luck to the Chinese so that’s why they do it.

Don’t know if this could help.

Personally, I’d stick with the Lord.

Skills come in many forms.

To survive as a society there is more needed than hunter-gatherers.

Teachers all kinds, historians, electricians, mathematicians, dishwashers and cooks, don't tell me you have no useful skills.

On a more serious note. If your looking to start over I recommend Chattanooga/Cleveland Tennessee area.

That is true, the issue is making sure I could get a survival group to buy that i could make myself useful. Otherwise, my chances of survival are 0 % since there is no way I could bet a survival group started among my coworkers, neighbors and friends and probably not even any local churches. It is either go to Texas or a Southern State, convince a survival group I have useful skills or die. I figure those are the sole options I have.

So as I was saying, that is the issue - I am in a situation where gaining the trust of a survival group I have not known for a long time looks to be the only chance I would have of living.

I would agree too, but every country has its own unique customs. I prefer this concept over the Korean concept on using fireworks. In Seoul I witnessed on numerous occassions South Koreans intentionally aiming firecrackers at their friends, or shall we say so-called friends.

I have a B.S. in physics and a M.S. in physics and am trying to finish a Doctorate in Physics - and so my abilities in math cover everything from elementary math through multivariable calculus. I also work with computers on a daily basis, making computer programs and designing visuals and things of that nature. Much of my life has been dedicated to these skill sets and so that is where a bulk of my skills would lie. I of course would be willing to learn any other skills that would be considered indispensable, so I am now learning what those skills are. Just am not sure how I would convince a community I can use them.

And so I take it you feel that exact same thing? That total decimation is coming in the next couple weeks and if one is not ready now than he or she is pretty much dead?

Not so.

I mean, yes, it takes more than one to survive. But these things have a way of working themselves out.

Are you pretty young?

It seems you must be. The older you become, the more you will know that life takes many turns and sometimes brings surprises never thought of.

I am 28 years old - is that your cue to laugh your ass off at how young and naive I am and my lack of worldliness?
