Before the era of modern game management, our forefathers nearly exterminated dozens of species with black-powder rifles. Now we are six or eight times more numerous and armed with semi autos. If the system of hunting licenses and tags breaks down as people poach to feed their families, there will be nothing left in a matter of weeks. Walter Mitty fantasies of "living off the land" are preposterous.
One thing is certain, if it ever gets to that point, there will be a lot fewer people first.
When did deer hunting become “big game hunting”? Teddy Roosevelt hunted elephants and rinos in Africa. Now that’s “big game,” and our prissy media would really have a hissy fit if anyone in public office did that today.
She never shot anything from a helicopter herself. She continued a long standing program allowing professional game wardens to cull wolves from helicopters.
This is because backcountry Alaskans, especially the natives, depend on wild game to feed their families, and the wolf overpopulation threatens that bounty. They have been doing it for decades under Republican and Democratic governors.
The proper answer to this allegation against her is: “That program was designed to feed Indian and Eskimo families in the winter. You must be a racist!”
