Tom Brady got his actress girlfriend pregnant out of wedlock, then promptly dumped her for a new model girlfriend – whom the New England Patriots quarterback married instead of the mother of his child.
Ben Roethlisberger was accused of sexually assault by a 20-year-old college student who said the Pittsburgh Steelers QB followed her into the ladies room of a Georgia night club and had his way with her. That followed a previous accusation that “Big Ben” sexually assualted a 31-year-old casino host at a Lake Tahoe hotel.
As reprehensible the behavior of both Brady and Roethlisberger, neither pro footballer experienced the kind of hateration directed at Tim Tebow because the second-year Denver Broncos QB dared to publicly profess his Christian faith.
Well, now the Tebow haters have something to slap high fives about. The Broncos have decided to replace their gritty young quarterback with former Indiana Colts signal caller Peyton Manning.
Never mind that Tebow took the Broncos from worst to first in the AFC West this past season, orchestrating six improbable late-game comeback victories in the process. Never mind that No. 15 – who had the second-best selling NFL jersey last year – led Denver to the second round of the playoffs, after besting Roethlisberger’s Steelers in the opening round.
Broncos management said it just couldn’t pass up an opportunity to acquire free agent Manning, who had a Hall of Fame career with the Colts, but who is attempting to come back from a neck injury that required four surgeries, and which kept him sidelined all of last season.
Of course, it’s the Broncos prerogative to sign or deal players as management sees fit. But the duplicity with which the club has dealt with Tebow leaves a lasting stain upon the franchise.
Back in November, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said of Tebow, “I believe he’ll be a great one.
In January, Broncos Executive Vice President John Elway said, “I think Tim has earned the right to be the starting quarterback going into training camp.”
And, just last month, Broncos Head Coach John Fox said of Tebow, “He is going to be a great quarterback in this league.”
I’m sure Bowlen, Elway and Fox will maintain that they meant what they said (when they said it). But the actions of the NFL club reveal what truly was in the hearts of the three men.
So there will be no Tebowing in Denver next football season. If Broncos management reaps what it has sown, the team will return to worst from first in its division.
Let's keep that performance in perspective... he took his team to the playoffs against the odds. Not bad for a rookie.
Lots of people seem to want to take potshots at Tebow because he's no Joe Montana. Well, he's a first-year quarterback; I'd say it's too soon to tell whether he's Joe Montana or not.
Maybe I’m taking this way out on a limb with this analogy but Tebow’s treatment is reminding me some of the Bibilical figure of Joseph who was unfairly dishonored but eventually winded up with highest honor among men. Anyway— here’s wishing the best for classy Tebow wherever his next endeavors wind up.
For all we know, the Broncos were embarrassed by the attention/controversy generated by Tebow's outspokeness.
Given the nature of the NFL and Tebow's performance last season I don't think its unreasonable to have suspicions.
Let’s keep that performance in perspective, he got his team to 8-8 which in that division was good enough for a 3 way tie by beating mostly teams that finished under 500 in his SECOND season in which he fumbled the ball more times than he threw TDs while his defense was giving 2 less TDs a game than they were before him.
Tebow has earned the pot shots, he’s a second year QB with atrocious career statistics: completion % - 47.3, yards per pass - 6.8, TDs - 17, INTs - 9, sacks - 39, fumbles - 14. Yeah he was showing some improvement in his 6 game win streak, but then came the season ending 3 game losing streak where-in he completed a TOTAL of 30 passes. He’s a nice guy, but he’s not a good QB, and anybody that would keep him over Peyton Manning is an idiot.
I wouldn't advocate keeping him over Peyton Manning, but I might advocate keeping them both, and having Manning mentor Tebow.
It’s not an opinion, it’s stats. It’s not like they’re chucking him aside for Matt Hasslebeck, this is Peyton Manning. If the Broncos were embarrassed it was by his 30 total completions in the last 3 games of the regular season. Given the nature of the NFL and Tebow’s performance last season it’s completely ridiculous to have suspicions. 30 completed passes in 3 games. Who would keep that guy as their QB when a HOFer is available?
If you compare the records of Peyton Manning and Tim Tebow, there's no comparison. One's a future Hall of Famer with a Super Bowl Ring and is a coach on the field. One's an unorthodox second year player with some potential and leadership qualities. Both players are well known as good people.
Tebow may someday be a good starting QB someday, but don't turn him into Kurt Warner.
I don’t think this is a Christian based decision. However, Manning is a bit long in the tooth to continue playing good ball and will probably sit the bench too much to have been worth the hassle.
I understand that, but what I get from the article is the way that Brady did a reprehensible thing (according to decent people), and Ben was accused of assault (but never proved), and there was not much complaining by the public. Replacing Tebow with Manning has the anti-religious people in a tizzy. I think they're the ones that should be told that it's "strictly business".
Because Payton Manning is a 36 year old with chronic neck problems, and Tebow is a healthy rookie with a very promising future.
God has a plan for Tim. He will come out fine even if he never plays another down.

Does ANYONE think that the NFL is going to allow Manning to get seriously injured on the field? There will be so many phantom roughing the QB calls that he might as well be wearing a flag at the hip!
On the other hand does ANYONE think that opposing players are not going to try and take him out?

If that were true, the Colts wouldn't have let him go. Apparently the team that knew him best didn't think he was worth keeping.
I think Elway and crew made a personal, not business, decision. Tebow took the Broncos to their first playoff in SIX years, and the fans were excited again--and buying merchandise like crazy. Manning's got what? A year or two? Maybe? Tebow's got a good 15 years ahead of him. Elway made a lousy business decision--but then it was obvsious to all he had a personal dislike of Tebow from the start. He'll regret his choice.

(Peyton Manning is less than 50% (9-10) in the post-season. He's been to the Super Bowl twice, but you probably don't want to bring up the time he lost. It was pretty horrid. They're still laughing about it in New Orleans.)
