Ahoy ye bilge-sucking landlubbers, and welcome to International Talk Like a Pirate Day.
Yarrr, that be right: Monday September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day, a celebration of all things piratey or at least, piracy as it was in the Golden Age of Piracy, not the scary new modern kind that sees armed men with AK-47s capture innocent tourists at gunpoint.
This decidedly unique holiday has its origins in 1995 and, bizarrely enough, came about from a sports injury.
John Baur (Ol Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Capn Slappy) of Albany, Oregon were playing racketball when one of them suffered pain and reacted with a yelp of Aaarrr!. From that moment, the two friends declared the date a new holiday.
For many years, it remained an inside joke between the pair, until Baur and Summers sent a letter about their new holiday to humor columnist Dave Barry in 2002. Barry liked the idea, and began promoting it, leading to rapidly expanding media coverage.

“ALLAHU AKBARrrrrrrrrrrrr!”
I’m Evil Hook-Handed Harry
Are ye ready t’ go below, me strong and handsome Mutineer? (I love Warren and this beautiful song he wrote, and you for sending it. I’m listening to it again and again.)
Yarr! back at ya’! What a saucy little puss!
Ready t’ go below me salty strumpet? I been waitin’ all afternoon t’ share my sextant ! Don’t fret though lassy. I brought some berth control!
Here’s some music to go along with the day (or evening).
The epic “Pirates”, by Emerson Lake and Palmer. Who wouldn’t want to be a pirate after listening to this song!?

Boldly! Loudly! -And loosen the straps, me Buccaneer! I’ll not be needin’ that much berth control! But be e’er mindful, that “Loose Lips Sink Ships!” Ye must go ever tighter thru the breach!
Me “ship”’s me own, ‘Til GreatHorn comes, To steal and plunder;
I cannot guess, Where went my dress, But my undies fly up yonder.
You've won my heart, me queen of the sea,
I'd run the plank to be with thee :-)
Oh, don’t run the plank, me darlin’ sea lord,
I promise if ye don’t, I’ll whack ye hard!
(Banging noises overhead)
Away with ye, ya’ sprogs! GreatHorn and I be plottin’ “sweet trade” below!
But there’s grog a’top a’plenty ta’ keep ye happy! - Or is that, a’plenty grog a’top? - Or just, plenty on top?
I be thinkin’, t’is the latter!
Aye me buxom wench...it appears this thread is ours!
(is highjacking a pirate thread considered bad form?)
