9/11 at the Cathedral [Featuring Buddhist Nun, Hindu Priest; Islamic Leaders: NO Catholics]

9/11 at the Cathedral SEPT 10, 2011 • BY MARK TOOLEY

On Sunday, the Episcopal Church’s National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. will host “A Call to Compassion” to commemorate 9/11. President Obama will attend and speak at the concluding “Concert for Hope.” Patti LaBelle will sing. CNN’s Anderson Cooper will host. After the recent earthquake and the collapse of a crane, the cathedral has gone “on the road” and relocated its 9/11 events to a nearby synagogue and the Kennedy Center.

Controversy has surrounded the cathedral’s choice of spiritual representatives. Although its prayer service will include the President of the Islamic Society of North America, a Buddhist nun, and a Hindu, evangelicals and conservative Protestants were omitted, though they represent 30-40 percent of Americans. No Catholic is listed on the event website. So liberal Episcopal clergy apparently will represent Christianity. On Thursday, a cathedral spokesman told The New York Times that a Baptist may be invited.

Hopefully the “Days of Compassion” will tastefully commemorate 9/11. But this weekend’s events almost certainly will not compare to the exalted tones of the National Cathedral’s post 9/11 service, held just 3 days after the attacks. All of official Washington attended, as did all living former presidents, except an ailing Ronald Reagan, who was represented by Nancy. President George W. Bush memorably spoke, as did a Jewish rabbi, Muslim imam and the Catholic Archbishop of Washington. Hymns included the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Mighty Fortress is our God," both suitably robust for a nation looking to regain its footing.

A shame, espically since I’m guessing a very large proportion of people who died that day were Catholic.

“Patti LaBelle will sing”

She needs the money.

You know, 9/11 doesn’t belong to the elite. They can’t have it. They don’t deserve it, no matter how they wipe their shoes on it. It’s ours. It’s mine. It’s how WE roll, so, let’s.

Let’s make sure they don’t ‘set the tone.’
Let’s pledge we won’t forget.
Let’s honor those who died, and, lived to tell.
Let’s remember. Always.

There were also dozens of chaplains and priests ministering. How many orange robes and turbans were there?

Isn’t that the Catholic Priest who was hit by debris?

I’m not sure what the objection is. In the East we still remember the canons against attending heretical conventicles. Surely you Latins don’t really want to show up at a “service” run by not merely heretics but actual apostates from any semblance of Apostolic Christianity. (Not being on the program doesn’t mean an invitation wasn’t extended: it could mean the local bishop took the attitude I’ve just enunciated.)

Yes. Father Judge. One of the 1st deceased carried out. He is seen in one of the towers in the Naudet documentary, with the firefighters, praying as he walked around.

Why no protest from the Cardinal for Washington DC?

Catholic prelates are being cowards. The Hindu (paganism) Muslim (pedophile prophet and serial bigamist) and a Buddhist nun (cycles of rebirths from humans to rats) have no bloody business being there.

But then again our current WH occupant said “We are NOT a Christian nation.”

Where’s Maxine Waters when he need her to tell them “To Go To Hell”?

Yes, Father Mychal Judge.

Here is Father Mike's helmet being presented to the Pope.

Will the LGBT Community be represented? Maybe liberal Episcopal clergy apparently will represent them too? I’ll remember those of all faiths who died on 9/11 in my prayers at Mass tomorrow.

If I could say just one thing, please: To those who died on 9/11 - I’m sorry for this crap. There are those of us faithful, however, who do mourn for you, who pray for you, & who remember you.

Eternal rest grant unto them, oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them, and may they rest in peace. Amen.

I googled and found there are over a billion Catholics in the world - a major denominaiton within a major religion.

It’s a shame, for not only those who died, but I bet many of the first responders were Catholic.

No doubt a buggering Episcopal bishop or two may be there. Oh I forgot, we now have lesbian Episcopal bishops as well.

There sure were a lot of Irish and Italian names on the roster of FDNY and NYPD killed that day. And I seem to recall seeing an awful lot of funeral Masses being conducted.

Not that there weren’t all kids of religions represented among them, but to exclude the clergy of the faith of so many of the fallen is beyond insulting. Of course Bloomberg excluded ALL clergy and FDNY from the NYC event. Go figure.

You forgot the scorn quotes around “bishop” and “bishops” in your post.

This week’s liturgy is about forgiveness, 70 times 7...at my Mass the priest tried to tie it in with 9/11. It was a difficult homily.
