Can we please keep comments about the Mormon faith off the political discussion threads?
one man's opinion...

Posted on 05/24/2011 4:07:08 PM PDT by ken5050

As we enter the GOP primary season, I'm starting to notice more and more an annoying trend here in FR. It seems as though everytime there's an article, or someone posts a comment about Romney, either pro or con, it nearly always devolves into an extended, and acrimonious discussion about the Mormon faith. Those who defend it, and those who, for whatever reasons, can't abide it, both sides seem determined to wage an "end of times" batte on all the FR threads. Frankly, I'm tired of it, and just wish it would stop. I think that probably 99% of others here feel the same way.

You don't mean that crowd at Nauvoo do you?

Actually, I believe we were discussing Haun's Mill massacre

There's criticism and then there's persecution, and then there's violent suppression. Some people think they're all the same thing ~ but they're not!

I couldn't agree more.

I cannot help but note the continued existence of congregations of Mormons in and around Nauvoo and Kansas City ~ do you imagine they were all slaughtered and brought back to life?

Actually, I can remember as a child traveling through Missouri and having my parents caution me not to let anyone know we were Mormons. (The Extermination Proclamation was not repealed until 1976) The RLDS remained and eventually became known as the Community of Christ.

Some Mormons returned to their roots and bought up farms their ancestors had been forced to abandon.

Not to argue, but like aren't all Mormons the same and in a sort of theological lockstep?

I don't know, are Catholics in theological lockstep?

If they are, then we are, if they are not, then we are not. It's pretty similar and I know because as a youth I attended Catholic Bible school and mass with some friends off and on. (Off once the Parrish priest found out I was a Mormon, lol!)

...you have really strange ideas about what we do. Ideas that I would never describe as “accurate” BTW.

Well; ya can't get much more 'vague' than this!

If you're gonna ACCUSE somebody of something; SPELL IT OUT!

Sorry, "The Christian Church" sounds so generic to me as being a conglomeration of all churches claiming to be Christian. I know who the Campbellites are and I know much of the history there but that name is just too generic for me to place.

Switch sides in the debate, but you'd have to mellow your attack posture or you'll be banned before anyone can call you a name.

Oh; it'd be mellow all right!

The ammo you've been given is all BLANKS!

No doubt the founders sought to establish a monopoly on the name and get control of the trade dress as well.

In some parts of the country it's not considered generic.

"Like it or not, our Constitution protects their right to believe as they wish, and to express that belief publicly."

They certainly do. And they have the right to open their own web sites to push whatever they wish to push.

But it's a privilege, not a right, to post on FR. I invite (grant privilege to) LIKE-MINDED pro-God, pro-Life, pro-Family, pro-Liberty conservatives to post here. I will tolerate others to a point at my personal discretion. When malcontents reach a point that I feel is intolerable or abusive, well, they may find their posting privileges suddenly revoked, as you did with your prior account.

Trolls, disruptors, malcontents, concern trolls, retreads, et al, are ZOT on sight or at the convenience of the site administrators.

Hey..we have a pretty solid basis of consensus..good..

Just for the record...I'm not anti-religious, as you seem to think I might be. My faith is very important to me, as is involvement in my parish.

The MSM will most definitely try to put a positive spin on Obamanomics ( "hey, they guy didn't realize just how bad it was until he got into the WH") but it won't work...at least I think so..

I think the Dems continue to delude themselves...maybe our losing the NY 36th was a good thing...they're gonna run on a mediscare platform...but you can't win a NATIONAL election just playing defense..you have to offer something..a good majority of Americans "sense" that theyr'e somethign major wrong with entitlements..

But I do think that international affairs/ the Mid East will be the deciding factor..and we have no idea YET how it will turn out...If we said that the chances of another Arab/Israeli war in the next 12 months was 50/50 BEFORE Obam's comments..then I fear it's now about 65/35 that there will be one..and Israel may well start it pre-emptively..

Be well

... it seems that 99% of the opposition to Romney on FR was because of his faith

Tunnel vision CAN be corrected I think.

OK, let me be blunt.

Mary's hymen was intact, and she was pregnant, Virgin birth.

A small cultural lesson: When a Jewish woman was going to be married in that day and age, she had better have an intact hymen, or her husband had better say he had taken her virginity, otherwise she would be stoned to death (they were not real big on women's rights back then) Mary had no problem passing the virginity test (intact hymen) or she would not be referred to as a virgin.

So, your insinuations not withstanding, God did not take her virginity even though she got pregnant. (No to the physical sex thing you keep wanting to talk about)

We poor mortals can do this now with "science" are you telling me God couldn't do it without breaking laws of nature?

Mormons believe that Jesus was Genetically God's son. That no laws of nature were broken to conceive him, and that Mary was still a virgin until after he was born.

(Please don't get into perpetual virginity and such; we don't believe that)

Now, have I needed to go wash my hair? No. Do I think you have a dirty mind for digging here? Yes.

When questioning Mary's fidelity, I think it wise to consider that Jesus being raised a good Jewish Boy, would not look kindly upon anyone trying to make his mom look like a slut. Just remember he is the one who will be judging you and try to have a bit more respect for his mom, OK?

It was intended to be generic, indicating that all who follow Christ are welcome inside our doors.

You may recognize us by another name, "Disciples of Christ".

Or possibly as the chosen religion of the 40th President.

and yet the mormons voted in a bloc for Romney the mormon in 2008 more thasn 90%

DU that is not voting individually

that is voting lock step

Funny, I don't remember Mitt being on the Ballot in 2008... Wait that was because he dropped out before the convention, and IIRC before the primary in Utah.

Personally, I didn't support him in polls, and would not have voted for him in the general unless he was the only conservative on the ballot. I did end up holding my nose and voting for McCain.

There is a real simple way to keep all the Mormons in Utah from voting for him... Defeat him in the primaries before the election.

That said, if it were down to the wire and I had to choose to vote for Mitt, or Barry's 2nd term, I would vote for Mitt, or any and all other candidates, including Hillary because I don't think they could damage the USA as much as Barry is doing.
