I've finally got the $$$, but I don't want to get something that won't be as reliable. The ones I see online run between $600-$900, which would be perfect. Any AR owner's suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Right now, I have to get to bed for working graves tonight. I'll reply when I wake up. Thank you all in advance.

Most may recommend the Colt. DPMS makes a relatively inexpensive AR, but the quality isn’t poor. If you have the money, Rock River and Les Baer are very nice.

The only thing I’d offer is in response to the “.223” in your title.

Make sure the AR you get will chamber and fire the 5.56mm (hotter) round. It will also shoot the .223.

The reverse is not safe/true.

Fuggedaboudit!

Real men know there's no caliber for a rifle except 7.62X54R.

Where else can you get a battle-tested rifle with 880 rounds of ammo for under $200? (And they come complete with this great pig-sticker.)

I’m very happy with my Rock River. As a bonus they’re manufactured in anti-gun Illinois.

My son has one of these:

LWRCI M6A2 SPR
(special purpose rifle)

It is a great little gun, chambered in NATO 5.56mm. Very reliable and accurate.

He also wants, but hasn't yet purchased, this little number from LWRCI, the REPR:

I would go with Military Specification guns, so even though they are a little more expensive, you are looking at a Bushmaster or Colt. At least with those, the military has done the testing.

I’m personally inclined toward Armalite, but a friend of mine recently bought a S&W M&P-15. It’s a well-built rifle that will print tight groups all day long. I’ve only been to the range with him twice, but have not seen a single FTF of other malfunction.

A friend of mine said he wished he would have bought one of these
http://www.bushmaster.com/catalog_xm15_BCWA30816MLMOE.asp

.308/7.62 NATO

They make a nice .223 carbine too and much cheaper to target shoot.

I have a S&W MP-15 (5.56 NATO but will safely fire .223 for target practice) that I LOVE!!

Right out of the box, this baby rocked!

When I started looking I went to my friends at our local Sheriff's Office and found they buy DPMS and thought the world of them.

I got a great buy on an Internet auction site for a DPMS AR-15 with the 6-position stock and the removable carry handle, chromed (lined) barrel. It is a 5.56 so it will shoot either 5.56 or 223.

Whatever you do make sure the underside of the barrel is stamped “5.56” or else you will only be able to fire the lower power 223 rounds. It does not matter what the lower receiver stamp says, you have to make sure the barrel is stamped 5.56.

This thread has just added to the FreeRepublic "bang list" (firearms interest list) by adding the keyword "banglist".

Any time a firearms-related thread is created on FreeRepublic, please be sure to add the "banglist" keyword to it so that interested FReepers don't miss it. Just a suggestion.
