A video of diabetic cats, most of which have found their furever homes. Many of these cats were placed by Diabetic Cats in Need, http://fdmb-cin.blogspot.com/
One of the cats featured in this video is my very own Atlas. When he came into my care last year he was full grown and under 5lbs. He was given to me to foster "for as long as he had left." Little did the shelter realize he had been given to an experienced feline diabetic caregiver.
The term, Off The Juice, means the cat no longer needs or uses insulin. Cats can go into remission if given proper care.
The other term you'll see is, Failed Foster, which simply means the foster decided to adopt the feline.
The video is in support of a group called Diabetic Cats In Need. This organization provided Atlas and our shelter with the insulin we needed. They do very good work.
Tell me about it...I have four rescues, and two other neighborhood cats that stay in our garage or greenhouse; depending on the weather. They get fed, as well; and I have caught some other cats sneaking a taste now and then. They are neglected by their low-rent owners; so my wife and I care for the pets THEY can’t be bothered with...
My guys will be getting a taste of Peter Cottontail this afternoon...interested to see how it goes...
I had to add a bit of fortifloura dust to the top of the raw rabbit to get Atlas to try it. Once he did...he was hooked!
NO finicky cats in this household (go figure); but I will keep that advice in mind...just in case. :-)
I got the family down the street with little girls, to accept foster kittens, from our shelter.
The first few times the girls came to visit me and the kittens they were delighted and ‘wanted one.’ I told them these were special kittens going to their furever homes that God had chosen for them. I was only watching over them until the time was ready.
The girls learned to recognize the black van that brought or took the new kitten litters. When they’d see the van they would wait on the sidewalk to ‘see.’ LOL...too cute.
Finally their Mom asked about what I was doing and I explained I was a foster for the shelter. Her girls actually helped socialize the kittens for their adoptive homes. A few weeks later I got a knock on the door. It was one of the girls and I told her I didn’t have any kittens right now. She smiled a big grin and said...Come to our house.
There in their den was a Momma cat with 3 kittens nursing. A box with a warmer in it etc. The girls said they were excited to be kitten guardian angels. I wondered how many of these kittens would be held on too.
The weeks past and soon the knock came again at the door. The girls had been crying that the little family had to go, but as Nina said, “they are happy tears because they are going to good homes.” I told the girls to come on in and check in my foster room....soon those tears turned to giggles and oooo’s and ahhhs....
Kitten season will be upon us soon...
De nada.
Thank you very much. I’m printing the list out now - my cats thank you too!
“”We had to put down one of our kitties because of Feline Infectious Peritonitis. Is there hope for a cat who gets FIP?””
The FIV my kitty has and most FIV and FELV acts like HIV does in humans, it’s slow moving and I wouldn’t even know he was “sick” unless he’d had a test. That was over 2 years ago when I found him and chose to keep him.
FIP is different, it’s very uncomfortable and usually much faster moving. :( Sorry about your kitties.
Kitty heaven :)
Yep
I feed only wet pate style food as dry food and gravies are filled with carbs.
I thought I was doing a good thing by feeding my kitty Science Diet Dry on the advice of my vet (at that time). He was my first Diabetic. I swear, Science Diet foods are the worst!
One of my vets, who attended UC Davis vet school told me once that they actually spend very little time on Feline nutrition and what little time they to get is in the form of lectures given by.......wait for it.......reps from dry food makers!

That explains a lot.
Stuffy won’t eat the pate style foods. So far, about the only commercial thing I’ve had any luck with is 9 Lives dry food. The larger sized kibbles she can’t seem to digest, either can’t chew them adequately or just can’t digest them; in any case she upchucks them. So, she has always hunted fresh meat for herself and I cook her a bit of salmon, fish or chicken fairly often. She will also eat canned tuna from time to time, and a bit of milk also. As for her hunting; she is about 10 yrs. old, and I don’t know how much longer she will continue to hunt. She’s just picky; won’t eat those packaged kitty treats, and in the rare instance that they come out with a canned food that she will eat, they either quit making it, or “improve” it, or the store quits carrying it. - She has been to where she won’t come in the house for about the last two years or so; so she is an outside kitty. We fixed her a room with an insulated bed and a heater; in the summer she insists on sleeping up in the rafters in the garage or camping out in a cool spot under an outbuilding here. - She grooms herself fastidiously. Has been a difficult girl in a way; but in a lot of ways she’s so sweet (yet aloof) and no trouble at all. - Tough as nails; wouldn’t have lasted out here in the wilderness if she wasn’t. If the dogs tried to bug her, she would slap them across the nose; but they, too, are her buddies and they just love on each other a lot.
Oh, and I know this may sound terrible; but we have blue tailed lizards in the garden and Stuffy zaps off their tails and eats those tails. The lizards go on their way most times and grow new tails. Occasionally, she opts for eating a whole, unlucky blue tailed lizard. I think she’s pretty much thinned out their population after 10 yrs. Oh, and birds when she can catch one.
