Could beer have helped lead to the rise of civilization? It's a possibility, some archaeologists say.
Their argument is that Stone Age farmers were domesticating cereals not so much to fill their stomachs but to lighten their heads, by turning the grains into beer. That has been their take for more than 50 years, and now one archaeologist says the evidence is getting stronger.

Beer didn’t “lubricate” the rise of civilization - it is the REASON for civilization.
The need for more grain to make beer, not to mention the difficulty of porting vats of fermenting mash, is the reason man stopped his nomadic existence and settled down.
That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it.
And I don’t even like beer.

The invention of beer is the first indication that Man could use tools, implements and intelligence to develop a more sophisticated food group than simple gathering of wild seed, tubers and fruits.
It is the beginning of civilization’s turn to specialized tasks of employment—always excluding prostitution of course which didn’t require the use of tools or implements.
