A little known obstacle in black women's efforts to lead healthy and active lifestyles is the extravagant hair styles that they maintain. In an effort to spare these women from the so-called obesity 'epidemic', an army of black hair stylists will be mobilized across America to trim the fat.
The initiative to arm black hairstylists with the weapons they need to combat obesity among black women is being spearheaded by U.S. Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin and UnitedHealthCare. This week, the dynamic duo plans to recruit 60,000 hairstylists at the the Bronner Brothers International Hair Show in Atlanta, Ga.
"Recognizing that data show many African American women avoid certain fitness activities in order to maintain their hairstyle," a UnitedHealthCare press release states, "the initiative will feature the first-ever exercise-friendly hair competition, designed to remove hairstyle-related barriers to physical activity for women."
Promoters of the initiative cite unspecified studies that show black women sporting extravagant hair styles avoid certain types of physical fitness activities just so they can maintain what's on their heads while neglecting their waist lines. According to recent government statistics, nearly 4 out of 5 black women are overweight or obese, though hair styles are not cited as a contributing factor.
"As the Surgeon General of the United States, my number one goal is to improve the health of the nation and I'm proud to join with First Lady Michelle Obama to attack this problem head-on," said Regina M. Benjamin, MD, MBA and the 18th Surgeon General of the United States. "I know first hand the important role salons play in our African American culture. I look forward to being an honorary judge of the Hair Fitness competition and to sharing the lessons we learn from this throughout the nation." Read more

I have read that Black men prefer obese women sexually. True or not, I have no idea as the one Black man I know well enough to ask the question to is married to a very tiny lady.

I don’t know if this particular article is satire or not, but I know it’s an issue. I have black girlfriends and former coworkers who are overweight and say they can’t go swimming because the water would wreck their costly blowouts. The ones who are serious about sports either have their hair cut short or put into rows, but the rows aren’t perceived as being entirely suitable for a business environment. They say, “You’re white, you can just run a comb through your hair after a shower—we can’t. It’s a big production for us.”
OK, whatever. But I notice that more upmarket black women manage to exercise, keep their weight down, and have nice hair. Perhaps the discipline that lets successful black women find time and energy to work out is the same discipline that takes them up the financial ladder?
The lifestyle of lower-middle-class people, whether black or white, does not incline toward working out, running, biking, playing tennis, swimming, etc. Weight is class related. The further up the social scale you go, the more fit and slender the women are.
Oh yeah it is the hair, not the junk food and sitting on your ass.

I was in line at a grocery store when an overly made up, obese, black woman was at the register. She had one of those $300-$500 hair styles and paid for part of her purchase with a EBT card. She then tried to pay for the rest with a debit card and had trouble with the touch screen because she had those expensively decorated 4 inch nails.
I wanted to scream at the irony of her waste of money while being on the public dole.
This CAN’T be legit, right?? But then if it is, why do you think they’re called heads??
They spend thousands on weaves.

Maybe people should follow Moochelle’s lead? Scrape your hair back in a tight bun for casual occasions, then pin on a braid, or hair pieces (wigs) to dress it up...you can remove the hairpiece prior to working up a sweat. Cheaper by far than being a slave to the beauty parlor and those screwy multi colored weaves you see around. Personally, I would love to have hair I could wear in a short afro style (cain’t, coz’ the perm solution makes my poker straight, fine hair fall out). Case in point, I think Bill Cosby’s wife is a stunner in her short do of natural curls. Work with what you have, gals.
