Sorry but even though Stalin was a POS, he was instrumental in helping to defeat Hitler. To pretend that he and the Russians were not an important part of the war against Germany is just as bad as any other type of revisionist history.

It’s like the people that want to ban the Confederate Flag. Don’t hide from history unless you REALLY want to repeat it.

Tell history as it is, not as you want it to be.

And the Soviets contributed exactly what at Normandy on 6/6/1944?

"Sorry but even though Stalin was a POS, he was instrumental in helping to defeat Hitler."

He was also instrumental in helping to creating Hitler's war machine, since german soldiers and pilots received training in Russia to bypass the Versailles limitations on their military. And he was instrumental in colluding with Hitler to invade Poland and start WWII. Stalin should not be represented at a D-Day memorial.

How about fighting hard and keeping a huge part of the German Army occupied in Russia.

Not to defend Stalin for his beliefs or how he dealt with his people but without the Soviet machine, we wouldn’t have won WWII. Had Hitler not invaded Russia, we would have faced the entire might of the Nazi military might.

Stalin didn’t have troops in Normandy but his people gave their lives fighting the Germans and by that sacrifice allowed the other allied forces to secure Normandy.

Like I said, he was a tyrant and a POS but he had a critical role in defeating the Nazi’s. Revisionist history is NOT a good thing in any direction. We must look the good and the bad in the face. If not, we’ll do it all again.

And he had nothing to do with D-Day other than to ask for it. We pulled his chestnuts out of the fire. It is an insult to the brave soldiers of the American, British, and Canadian armies who fought there to include him in the memorial. It is especially an insult to the boys of Bedford, Virginia who fell in that battle.

I’m not going to argue about it. I’ll agree to disagree. Good day.

A petition? Doesn’t anyone in Virginia own a sledge hammer or an acetylene torch?

It always helps to read the article before commenting. Stalin, no matter what his good traits were (!), was a murderous thug of epic proportions and deserves no statue on American soil. If he’s to be mentioned in history let it be as a jailer and destroyer of hundreds of millions of lives, including those Americans killed with Russian weapons and done in by Soviet treachery.

I never thought I’d see Stalin apologists on FR. I have family members who were murdered by Stalin. He made Hitler look like an amateur by comparison. For someone to come on here and praise him under false pretenses, I’m sickened.

If you’re going to have statues of mass murdering tyrants up and have no problem with Stalin’s, then put Hitler’s up too.

By the way, turning over approximately half of Europe to be maimed, tortured, and murdered by Communists for another 50 years was part of his legacy. It is debatable who actually “won” WWII.

I read the article and I won’t disagree, he was an absolute tyrant. However, like I said, he did contribute to defeating Germany.

I personally think the man rates as one of the worst scum that has ever lived, but don’t take the statue as a celebration of him, but as a historical lesson.

Have you ever been to Russia? I have. The scars of what happened in WWII are still there in many parts of the country. It’s in the eyes of the people that live there, old and young. There, they have two versions of the war. The official version that glorifies Stalin and the Soviet leadership, then the real version... the one of the people that fought and died. The people that never gave up and fought, not for their government or a single leader but for the people and for the world. In the real version, Americans to this day are praised for our sacrifices that saved their lives over there. They praise the British, Australians, Canadians, French, and everyone else that landed on the shores of Normandy. They also know that Stalin forced pressure on their front with the Germans to give us the chance to beat back the Germans.

Stalin was a monster, and I won’t disagree with that but don’t lie to yourself or to others thinking he had nothing to do with D-Day. Without the sacrifices of the people of Russia, we never would have gotten off the beaches. Remember that no matter what.

Nope, doesn’t even pass the sniff test my friend. But I can see where your logic is welded to so how about this, “WE TAKE HIS STATUE OUT BECAUSE OF WHAT HE DID DO!”

My uncle on my mother’s side was killed fighting the Russians to keep them out of Latvia. Most of my father’s family lived in Latvia with the boot of communism on their necks. Screw Stalin.

Considering why I left Virginia anyway, have fun. I’ve had enough of this discussion.

"Without the sacrifices of the people of Russia, we never would have gotten off the beaches. Remember that no matter what."

Uh...no. I suspect that if there had not been a second front in Europe, we would have re-prioritized and put the pacific theater on the back, back burner. Instead of incinerating Japan with waves of B-29s, we would have hit Germany with those resources. We could have effectively doubled our naval resources around Europe. Corsairs and Hell Cats would have been contributing to the air campaign. Oh yeah, add six Marine divisions to the fight. The United States fought two separate wars in WWII and supplied the Soviets with vital equipment at the same time. Stalin wasn't fighting Hitler to help us, or Europe; he was fighting Hitler to save his own fat a$$. He does not belong at a D-Day memorial.

Hope no nice feller with an old ratty pickup has a little accident. Be a pity to have the statute knocked over.

Or we could have a nostalgic "scrap metal drive" to re-create the contribution of the Home Front. We could kick it off with Joe's metal head (Stalin, not Biden).

Exactly. To hell with Stalin. (He’s already there anyway).
