From wikipedia:
Godwin's Law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies)[1] is a humorous observation made by Mike Godwin in 1990 which has become an Internet adage. It states: "As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1."[2][3]
Godwin's Law is often cited in online discussions as a deterrent against the use of arguments in the widespread reductio ad Hitlerum form. The rule does not make any statement about whether any particular reference or comparison to Adolf Hitler or the Nazis might be appropriate, but only asserts that the likelihood of such a reference or comparison arising increases as the discussion progresses. It is precisely because such a comparison or reference may sometimes be appropriate, Godwin has argued,[4] that overuse of Nazi and Hitler comparisons should be avoided, because it robs the valid comparisons of their impact.
Although in one of its early forms Godwin's Law referred specifically to Usenet newsgroup discussions,[5] the law is now applied to any threaded online discussion: electronic mailing lists, message boards, chat rooms, and more recently blog comment threads and wiki talk pages.
So yes, basically, Hitler or Nazi references should always be avoided.
Until your leader starts talking about civilian armies.
Or has underlings who wish to disregard free speech or see it as a distraction.
And always -- always -- until they want to have a non-parentally-pre-approved conversation with your children.
Carry on!

AWESOME thread! How about the more things change the more they stay the same? The picture on the left is the Obama Salute, the picture on the right is the "Hitler Salute". Hitler used it in speeches to symbolize socialist unity.

And always—always—until they want to have a non-parentally-pre-approved conversation with your children. I hear the official song of the youngest boy’s group is going to be “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimpf.”

How ironic. On the same day I call my local school district to ask if they are participating in the presidential adress to students on September 8th, they are showing a documentary on the Hitler Youth on the Military Channel. LOL.
So are they participating?

I vote “Nay!”
You can discuss the vile, fascist policies of the Obama Adminstration without bothering with the Nazi analogies or Hitler comparisons. They're plenty bad, all by themselves.
Calling them Commies, on the other hand, is fine with me.

Thank you for this post. It is way overdue.
When the maggot-infested, dope-smoking progressives started to use the word "fascist" against anyone who resisted them, I could see the retirement of perfectly valid historical comparisons. Nazi is no different.
Occasionally, the historical shoe fits and, I for one, have no intension of not using perfectly fitting comparisons when appropriate, with supporting examples of the behavior that justifies the comparison.

Godwin's Law... states: "As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1." And the probability of the use of any other word, phrase, or metaphor also approaches 1 as the thread length increases. The fact that our relativistic society has discarded every other objective measure of evil other than Nazism should not detract from the complete meaninglessness of this "Godwin's Law".
