EMP attack would wipe out hundreds of millions of Americans
Unto the Breach ^ | 12 Feb 2009

Posted on 02/13/2009 7:30:24 AM PST by FatMax

Bill Forstchen, Newt Gingrich's co-author of several books is interviewed on Unto the Breach, and discusses Abraham Lincoln's bicentennial. In the middle of the interview, Bill mentions his research on an EMP attack, which terrorists could employ apparently at any time. Such an attack he said could wipe out most of the US overnight.

Well put. A recognized “terrorist state” has all the pieces for a worst case tinfoil hat hysterical nutcase scenario; they just have to put it together.

Wow. I haven’t had a drainpipe freeze since the eighties. (It was an outside pipe on a rental in Norfolk, VA).

Without updated anti ballistic missile technology, we are unprotected. It is no big secret that China and North Korea are helping Iran. This kind of war by proxy can not be comprehended by anyone in this administration.

Why?

Communists are our friends. Why would they want to hurt us? /s

EMP attack would wipe out hundreds of millions of Americans

So would total Democrat control of Congress and the White House.

And Iran just launched a satellite, so they now have ICBM capability. Plus, he mentioned that there were alternative means of delivery that would be much more difficult to stop. And Barack Hussein Obama won’t fund “unproven missile defense systems” so who’ll be protecting us?

The islamic regime in Iran is loony, but they won't provoke such an incident which will end with full retaliation by our subs. They want nuclear capability for deterrance like North Korea. They have increased significantly their regional (and beyond) political influence. They want to cement these gains by having a deterrence, not lose everything by launching WMD attacks on the US mainland. Even without these apocalyptical scenarios (nukes and EMP raining on the world etc.) the situation is serious enough. The islamic regime in Iran could create a stranglehold on the region's energy ressources and threaten Israel's existance.

The nukes and missiles serve as blackmail for the mullahs, so they can press the West for concessions (which the Dems will give them).

The lack of Missile Defense makes the West vulnerable to the mullah's blackmail. To resist this blackmail we need Missile Defense.

EMP cannot be “done at anytime”. This guy is hyping for his book. To get a full sense of EMP you could listen to Coast to Coast or realize that solar flares hit us frequently. Yes it could be a problem. Sure I bet our enemies are working on it. Now everyone run around and act crazy

A car is basically a big Faraday Cage, so is a gas pump, encased in metal.

Not effective at the right frequencies to offer meaningful protection. There have been demonstrations of vehicles disabled by local EMP.

You certainly wouldn’t be guaranteed protection, but from my understanding, various factors, including the proximity to the attack, would determine whether or not the car computer would cease to function.

From what I read, it seemed as though many cars would certainly be affected, but it wouldn’t be all of them.

Welcome to the 21st century. Some of us are cyborgs - and no I’m not being stupid here. I’m alive because I have a pacemaker; zap the computer and I’ll die pronto.

There’s also those relying on robotics & such, fly-by-wire airliners a prime example.

“I think that may be the author’s point. But thank you kindly for all of the clever and original Nancy Pelosi-math compliments.”

You must have mistaken me for someone else— I try to avoid Nancy Pelosi math whenever possible.

Come to think of it, I try to avoid Nancy Pelosi _period_ whenever possible.

Which is why today, (taking a break) I am going through our emergency supplies. 3 50 gallon water tanks and a chest full of antibiactorial babywipes and other things. Cough syrup, fever reducer, etc... Those big plastic containers are good to keep those stored and fit nicely in a closet.

I’ve commented on here before that I am a bit paranoid (thank you Sept 11, I trace it completely back to then. I also trace my conservatism to then too though) But these are good things to have in case of a natural disaster too. However I am not going to rule out a massive hit anymore. Heck, with Hussein in office, I’m not sure I can even trust my own government.

Man, I always thought those people like on Ruby Ridge were “fringe” nutjobs. Maybe they were. Maybe I am. I only know I am uncertain about the future at this point. Especially when something completely insane like running a piece of legislation through in the TRILLIONS is being considered to be passed without even reading it because someone has to get to Europe.

I am in the Twilight Zone. I swear I am trapped in a damn Twilight Zone episode.

That’s an EMP resulting from an nuclear explosion. The author is talking about EMPs from EMP weapons only. Big difference.

Yeah, one is rather impractical and the other is a fantasy.

So is there nothing to this at all? What concerns me is that Iran is nuking up, promising daily to wipe out us and Israel, and is spinning about 10,000 centrifuges right now. What will stop them?

The Obama administration certainly won’t. He promises to defund missile defense, cut our nuclear arsenal, cut the defense budget 10%, promises not to weaponize space, and now cuts Iranian sanctions that “aren’t working.”

The EMP may not happen tomorrow, but obviously the government isn’t performing their primary function of defending America. Do we want to wait around and make fun of those who are trying to sound the warning?

Iran dumping a nuke on Israel (or anywhere else) is the larger threat. What is our response? If Obama chooses to do nothing (and that is most likely) then Israel is gone and we are next. An EMP will not even be a concern. IF an EMP could be generated without a nuke then our good “friends” in the former Soviet Union or China would have already exploited same. A large enough EMP is not easy to come by

Actually it takes from ~15J to 35 or 40J to stop the heart (possibly less depending upon each person’s physiology). I work on implantable grade defibrillators and that’s the range that we function in. Of course that’s internal to the heart, but generally external defibrillators aren’t all that much more powerful and are started lower than 40J to begin with.

The real problem becomes starting the heart up again if the patient’s heart can’t do that on its own. What we do is pace the heart until it is functioning on its own.

Me, I’m an expert electronics technician and have been in the medical industry working on these for 7 years.

Actually, an EMP attack wouldn’t kill anybody except those on aircraft or computerized life-support.
People would die afterwards of plague and starvation as vital services came to a halt without computer support.

I was being general and I will definately defer to you since you have more direct knowledge. I’m used to working in the Kilo and Mega Joules so typically if you got hooked up on anything I’m working with it will kill you and we may not even find the body.
