Bill Forstchen, Newt Gingrich's co-author of several books is interviewed on Unto the Breach, and discusses Abraham Lincoln's bicentennial. In the middle of the interview, Bill mentions his research on an EMP attack, which terrorists could employ apparently at any time. Such an attack he said could wipe out most of the US overnight.
Al-Qaeda of course is a different matter.
When the infrastructure is destroyed,
you will starve to death or not be able to find clean water.
I’ve got a well and I can dig up a hand pump if needed. I’ll sell water at a fair price.
‘When the infrastructure is destroyed,
you will starve to death or not be able to find clean water.’
Maybe YOU would, not me or mine.

EMP is shorthand for Electro Magnetic Pulse. It is a rather unusual and frightening by-product when a nuclear bomb is detonated above the earths atmosphere. We all know that our atmosphere and the magnetic field which surrounds our planet is a thin layer which not only keeps us alive, but also protects us from dangerous radiation from the sun. On a fairly regular basis there are huge solar storms on the suns surface which emit powerful jets of deadly radiation. If not for the protective layer of our atmosphere and magnetic field, those storms would fry us. At times though, the storm is so power that enough disruptive energy reaches the earths surface that it drowns out radio waves and even shorts electrical power grids. . .this happened seve ral years back in Canada.
And our gov’t, whose primary responsibility is providing for our defense, won’t take this seriously. Bill talks about that, too. The show was supposed to be about Abraham Lincoln’s bicentennial, and this should have been a show of its own.
Go ahead and laugh it up. Just look into it. Heritage.org has written about it, not just us freaks with tinfoil hats.
So I can say that any other significant power collapse will “cause hundreds of millions of deaths”? The effects described sound pretty much to what happened in New Orleans during the hurricane. It’s hysterical hyperbole. If electricity dependant infrastructure collapses, without the possibility of rebuilding within forseeable time, folks will have to live like they did before everything was electrified.
An EMP is serious business, but this ridiculous hyperbole diminishes the seriousness of this issue.
Actually, I am posting from the inside of a farraday cage.
Hundreds of millions, Nancy Pelosi math.......
How did we survive before electricity? How do millions of third world people live without nearly comparable infrastructure?
You joke, but I really was yesterday. I barly had enough leakage to get the wireless to work.
Maybe YOU would, not me or mine.
But some folks with guns will come and kill you for your food and water.
That’s why you should be better armed.
But that will end. We have been blessed , we never have.
EMP blasts, can do damage if set off just right.
In fact I did see an article that we used it in limited form in 1991 and 93 against Iraq.
a rabid unicorn invasion is likely going to be a greater and more realistic threat to america than a EMP weapon that isn’t also a nuke.
A few years back Popular Mechanics had an article that was more or less a guide of “how to” create an EMP. Most often it’s thought of in terms of after a nuclear blast, however, an EMP can be generated in other ways, at least per the article. (Why they would publish this is an entirely different matter....)
I’m usually not an optimist, but on the “bright side” of things, it would also take out the electronic database of health records currently being pushed through in porkulus. And, teleprompters for _all_, not just the news anchors!
On a serious note, as others have pointed out, an EMP won’t kill people— at least not outright. It’s the cascading effects that will.
