Senator McCain: Excite the Base; Pick Bobby Jindal for VP
Right Up Front ^ | June 8, 2008 | Aaron Schwitters

Everyone has a different theory as to the direction in which Senator McCain should go with his VP pick for the ticket. Some say choosing a Democrat like Joe Lieberman would appeal to moderates and independents--I like that idea only because it would drive the hyper-caffeinated left-wing blogosphere into apoplectic conniptions. But there are practical matters to consider. If, heaven forbid, a Vice President Lieberman assumed the presidency, one would assume he would affiliate himself with the Democrats. Unacceptable.

So we're left with the slate of rumored Republican picks, among them Florida Governor Charlie Crist, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Minneapolis Governor Tim Pawlenty, and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal. They all have plusses and minuses, but one stands out: Bobby Jindal. Here's why:

Lieberman would be my hope. then we don’t have to support the ticket, it will win anyway, and conservatives can reorganize around a third party or a reconstituted GOP.

When called by McCain's campaign for money, I've been asking, "Why are you calling me, I'm a conservative?" They appear to be getting a lot of that.

I will likely vote for the guy because there is not good alternative (candidate, message or otherwise). But when it comes to the prospect of exciting me, that boat has sailed.

As Governor, Jindal has tackled corruption and lax ethics in a state known for nasty, dirty governance. He turned a state health department that was $400 million in debt into one with a $220 million surplus.

I like Bobby Jindal but this claim strains believability. Didnt he just take office a couple of months ago? Unless he eliminated the department I don't see how a $600M swing could happen in such a short time.

All this talk is irritating to me, because there are some people out there who actually care about winning the war on terror. And the Republican Party in general and John McCain in particular remain our best hope of doing that.

Too often, we make the perfect the enemy of the good. If you don’t think John McCain is ideologically pure enough, that’s fine. But, we’re fighting a war. Human lives hang in the balance. One of two men will take office in January — one will retreat from islamic extremists and the other will accept only victory. That’s the question of this election!

Jindal or Watts would work fine for me; Romney would be out unless he publically renounced and gave up the special underwear....

Before he was a member of congress he was the head of the state’s health department in the late 90s. So that feat took place years ago. Sorry, I maybe should have delved into the details there. :)

I think Jindal should actually serve as Governor of Louisiana for a time before jumping into presidential politics. He’s still very young, and I’m not sure tying himself to McCain is the best political move in the long run.

Jindal achieved the Health Department spending cuts before he became governor.

I think also Jindal has reduced taxes and regulations on businesses in Louisiana after he became governor.

Jindal is a conservative. McCain is a socialist ( McCain-Fiengold, Amnesty for illegals which is cultural Marxism, Cap and trade which is pure socialism).

Why would a socialist pick a conservative? I think McCain will pick Hillary Clinton if Obama, the other Marxist, doesn’t.

“All this talk is irritating to me, because there are some people out there who actually care about winning the war on terror.”

But for those of us who believe that the WoT will be won as much within the USA as in Iraq and all foreign nations put together, McCain looks far less tough than he pretends to be.

The twin towers were not in Baghdad. McCain’s open borders, no enforcement polices on immigration pose far more danger to US security against terrorism than anything happening overseas.

“McCain looks far less tough than he pretends to be.”

McCain spent more time in a communist prison than Obama has spent in the Senate. I think his toughness is well established.

I think you really mean to say that you don’t agree with all of his policies. That’s fine. Neither do I. But our choice is not John McCain or some perfect conservative. Our choice is John McCain or Barack Obama. The primaries are over!

I still like Mitt for Veep, but either Jindal or J.C. Watts would really fire things up.

It doesn't make any sense to me that McCain would choose a conservative to be his VP. He has made it crystally, painfully UBER clear that he is banking on winning this election by gaining independent & moderate votes. It won't help him much with those voters if he picks a real conservative. He has as much as SAID that he is not trying to win over conservative voters.

Will you people that have stated you are voting for McCain because he is "better than Obama" still vote for him if he picks a democrat like Lieberman, or a liberal RINO for VP? Would you consider that to be an ominous sign that doesn't bode well for the future? McCain has caved on nearly every other issue in favor of the liberals - I believe it's only going to be a matter of time before he caves on the war issue as well.

We're going to be so screwed after November - I'd rather the democrats get the blame for it than the republicans. Besides, I really do believe that the two parties have an unspoken agreement to switch power every so often & keep the status quo going - this way they ALL can stay in power for their whole lives. The coin has already been tossed & the agreement is that this year is the democrat's turn to win. McCain's job is to throw the election - and I think he will do his job magnificently!

Lets see. We barely pass funding legislation now (and sometimes delayed by a month) with the congress we have.

Do you honestly think McCain will get funding passed with a +70 margin in the house and filibuster proof senate?

Naivety will be the GOP’s undoing.

EVs. EVs. EVs.

You have to offset loss of Colorado and Iowa and Bill Richardson’s New Mexico. Bush had 286 EVs. CO is 9, NM is 5 and Iowa is 7. That’s 21. The only place to find 21 EVs is Michigan, Wisconsin and New Hampshire. Just MI and NH would suffice, actually.

The VP has to put those EVs into play. Bobby Jindal doesn’t do that.
