Walmart ruining holidays for workers
vanity | November 13, 2011 | Linda Martine

Posted on 11/13/2011 11:06:23 AM PST by eccentric

Around the country, night workers at Walmart stores are being told to come in five hours early ON Thanksgiving. After having work until 7am that morning, they must get whatever sleep they can and then reutrn to work at 5pm for a 12 hour shift. How much time does this leave for them to spend the holiday with their family?

Walmart wants to call their employees associates. No, they are just workers.

Nobody on their deathbed ever says, “I wish I put more hours in at the office.”

Does anybody ever say, "I wish I had exercised better work ethic so I would still have my job?"

Nowhere in this post did I mention “I” or “me.” I was speaking out for the thousands of workers who are having their job hours changed on a holiday with only a few weeks notice. Of course, working holidays is expected in retail. Having hours change to working 12 shifts with only 10 between is NOT. Thanksgiving is NOT Black Friday.

Back in the early 80s, my brother and I installed solar hot water heating systems. One evening, we were trying to finish up on a roof top and my brother’s pager kept going off. It was his wife calling. We didn’t have cell phones in those days, so we just kept moving as fast as we could to wrap up the job.

The sun had gone down, and we were just getting the last of our solar collector connections done, when all of a sudden, huge fireworks began bursting in the sky above us. We both stood and gawked at them. It took us a minute to realize what the celebration was all about....it was New Year’s Eve.

We shared a good laugh about that.

Friend, it’s called work, and it’s a priority for some folks who have families to feed.

**I have to work Thanksgiving. It’s double time.***

If people wanted off for holidays they would apply for vacation those days.

WE then would check the schedules to see what our chances of working those days were. We got paid our regular hourly pay, then time and one half for those same hours. Basicly double time and a half.

I loved working holidays and other’s days off!

My dad always said a man could get by on regular pay, but with time and 1/2 he could LIVE WELL! He was right!

I love the people who post the fatuous remark "If you don't like it get another job." A wonderful and acceptable bromide in the abstract.(I can just hear the same remark when the ten year old complains of being tired after working a twelve hour shift in the mine.) The idiot devotee of such "wisdom" never realizes that the bromide usually does not apply to the specific individual worker, as there may be no other jobs available.

Doesn't matter. if you are bitching about your job, you're not being a good emplyee, and your employer deserves that you QUIT and allow someone who appreciates the job comes to work your position instead.

No employer should ever have the "right" to compel a person to work twelve hours per day seven days a week.

AH, now I see, you realize you've put up a bunch of nonsense and to clinch that nonsensical argument you set the barrier impossibly high.

Kind of like 'being for dirty air and water' if you object to the EPA.

You are correct. Sam Walton is looked upon as a god within the WalMart organization like Ford in “Brave New World”. But as you say, if you don’t like it, get another job.

And I have never gotten overtime, either.

Some people don’t mind working for the extra money. I am sure some of them will actually get overtime or differential pay.

No, they won't.

WalMart will simply cut back on their hours on another day during the pay period. I know someone who works there - that's the way those jerks at WalMart coporate do things.

And to the jerks who say 'get off your ass and find another job' - there are people in our area, right now, who have college degrees and are out there begging for work - just how in the hell do you think a WalMart employee will fare when college graduates aren't finding jobs?

So something that happened 10 or 15 years ago is going to save your argument? We are talking about today.

Just proves my point that you’re full of crap.

There is no overtime at Walmart.

More idiocy from the uneducated and uninformed class.

Or Joe Paterno at Penn State.

Nurses and other people who work in positions where there are night hours are called to do this all the time...many’s the time I was semicomatose on Christmas morning because I had to work hours like this. It’s the cost of being employed . Does that mean we have to like it?? Of course not, but it is a job and in this day and age, we need to keep that in mind.

What I think of it is this is part of the job. They should be thankful they have a job and do everything they can do to preserve it.

I never understand why people bash Wal-Mart, they save people literally billions of dollars a year.

They are also the largest employer in the world. I see lots of older people and handicapped people working there too, it seems they hire the people other companies won't.
