Don't spin the Civil War
Washington Post ^ | 12.27.10 | E.J. DIONNE jR.

The Civil War is about to loom very large in the popular memory. We would do well to be candid about its causes and not allow the distortions of contemporary politics or long-standing myths to cloud our understanding of why the nation fell apart.

The coming year will mark the 150th anniversary of the onset of the conflict, which is usually dated to April 12, 1861, when Confederate batteries opened fire at 4:30 a.m. on federal troops occupying Fort Sumter. Union forces surrendered the next day, after 34 hours of shelling.

As a person who lives in and was raised in the South I participated in quite a few such threads.

I find these threads to be a fascinating display of cognitive dissonance as the Confederate Apologists attempt to separate slavery from the Confederacy.

Slavery was a central issue, no one is denying that fact. The majority of the men in the Texas Secession Convention were slaveholders, so naturally they were going to protect their interests. That being said, It should also be noted that the majority of Americans thought the white race was superior at that time. That wasn’t just a Southern or Texan view.By today’s standards, slavery is certainly immoral. By the standards of 1861, most people north and South did not consider it so.
Regarding support of slavery, the majority of the 60,000 men who fought for the Confederacy from Texas, didn’t own slaves, and were not fighting for slavery, though by the standards of that day, both moral and legal, they would not have been wrong to do so.

God help you if you live in Austin. (Moscow on the Colorado). I would rather live anywhere than in Travis County. Liberal Hell of Texas!

Wel gosh darnn eet wee kant hep it that wee is sew dum doun hear.hows we posed too no whut a POE is. sews sence wes illiturat dum peeple kant pocciblee ceep upp with yu smartt yankeys, hear is a poum fer ya.

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;—
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
She was a child and I was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love—
I and my Annabel Lee—
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud by night
Chilling my Annabel Lee;
So that her high-born kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me:—
Yes! that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of a cloud, chilling
And killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in Heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:—

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I see the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride,
In her sepulchre there by the sea—
In her tomb by the side of the sea.

(As if everyone knows WTF POE is). Edgar Allen? That’s the Poe I know and love.

You LOST, nitwit.

To the victors go the spoils.

If you’d have been good enough to have actually won, you’d have a right to whine.

You didn’t and you don’t.

Accept being an American citizen, accept that Blacks are free and accept that the Stars and Stripes are YOUR national standard, too.

Otherwise, head south a few clicks and learn to love beans and warm tequila.

Well duh ... obviously.

If you read all I posted, you'll see that IN THE 1700'S, wrong as we now know it is, it WAS a customary practice around the world, that obviously gradually evolved into the abomination of slavery.

This is a magnificent country that evolved over 200+ years. As a society endures, folks hopefully become educated and civilized. Women were treated as chattel at one time here, too .. abusive child labor was common, as well. Those issues set you off, too ?

“God help you if you live in Austin. (Moscow on the Colorado). I would rather live anywhere than in Travis County. Liberal Hell of Texas!”

Austin is where I went to school, where I met my wife, where my kids were born and the city that provides good work opportunities for my wife and I.

The weather is good, the food is good and I'm 5 minutes from around 50 bars to see music, 5 minutes from the greenbelt, 5 minutes from great bike riding and five minutes from Barton Springs pool where the water is always 69 degrees and almost always has dozens upon dozens of UT co-eds who elect to go topless.

“This is a magnificent country that evolved over 200+ years. As a society endures, folks hopefully become educated and civilized.”

Societies do not evolve over time where a certain treatment of a class of people at some point becomes no longer ethical. Instead, practices such as slavery are an abomination today just like they were an abomination in 1860 and just as it was in 1750.

And if you are to believe that societies evolve, you must be willing to accept that societal treatment of certain classes of people today may be in the future deemed unethical.

I am not willing to accept that premise.

Black Confederates.

But not black Confederate soldiers. Not until, I believe, some time in 1864. Prior to that the work was done by blacks, both free and slave, who were not considered soldiers. Some were there by choice, many others were not. In many cases, your work was done by local slaves impressed by the government for the work.

You've used these techniques throughout this entire thread.

I beg your pardon? You are the one claiming that they were enlisted as soldiers. Pointing out that their service was not supported by the state or accepted by the Confederate government is not changing the subject. It's pointing out the errors in your story. You seem to believe that there were legions of stalwart Black soldiers fighting side by side with their white compatriots in defense of Confederate honor, and that their service was recognized and respected by the Davis government and their white comrades-in-arms. Nothing could be further from the truth.

So if pointing out the errors in your story and not accepting your stories as fact is 'arguing like a liberal' then I would imagine that you get your clock cleaned by liberals on a regular basis.
