Don't spin the Civil War
Washington Post ^ | 12.27.10 | E.J. DIONNE jR.

The Civil War is about to loom very large in the popular memory. We would do well to be candid about its causes and not allow the distortions of contemporary politics or long-standing myths to cloud our understanding of why the nation fell apart.

The coming year will mark the 150th anniversary of the onset of the conflict, which is usually dated to April 12, 1861, when Confederate batteries opened fire at 4:30 a.m. on federal troops occupying Fort Sumter. Union forces surrendered the next day, after 34 hours of shelling.

It's wrong and it's absolutely giving the enemies of our Republic the ammo to paint all conservatives as one if your ilk.

Be interesting if one of these Yahoos would actually post one of these mythical internet blog posts where the Free Republic secession kooks were spotlighted. Although I've never seen one I am sure they exist, don't they? Seeing one would make feel like a rock star.

Gods and Generals is an excellent film. There was a third one but I can’t seem to find it or remember the name. The first was Gettysburgh.

No beans? Without them you don’t get the accompanying music.

I did not know there was a third film. It is not listed on link since “Gods and Generals” is the most recent film. If you think of it,let me know. Maybe it has not yet been released?

If secession was not about slavery and was instead about state’s rights, why is it that the Declarations of Secession of South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and Texas mention slavery a total of 82 times and do not mention the 10th Amendment or States’ Rights at all?

Tick, tick, tick...

I believe that there was talk of a third film but it was shelved.

Please feel free to provide the issue number and I’ll try to track it down.

Here is a link to the Blue & Grey Magazine website.

I agree. Still, it was an excellent film. There are so few films being released that I like. I was hoping Mel Gibson would produce one about the Civil War, but I guess that is now out.

I don't think he ever seriously considered it. I would like to see a movie made about some of the cavalry battles and campaigns in the far western theatre at some point.

The 3rd movie would have been based on The Last Full Measure but I don't think it ever got out of the planning phase because while Gods and Generals was a good movie for those of us who have read the books and follow the subject, it didn't make any money so the 3rd film was shelved.

You seriously don't think people are looking at posts like what the wannabes put out to paint the entire conservative movement?

People look at FR all the time for ammo to paint conservatives as either fringe right-wing and/or racist/bigoted/whatever. Shilling for slavery and disgracing yourself by cloaking it in the states rights argument gives them the EXACT ammo they are looking for. Way to go.

advocating rebellion to keep other men and women in slavery

And precisely who is doing that, mikey?

And it's funny, you calling me trailer trash. Hilarious even.

Hit the nail on the head again, did I. Thought so......

LOL - you are the one making excuses and keeping up with the facade the CSA used to justify the Civil War and the continuation of slavery. Keep those excuses (and bad stereotypes of southerners - notice the small s?) coming, boy.

You are pathetic......

45 ACP.

A 9MM is a pop gun. One shot is preferable to 5.

I prefer to carry a .357, though. I’m old school. Besides, one shot, one kill....and jamming is never a consideration.

There are still demoncrats in the South. As there are RINOs. The demoncrat party was long ago co-opted by the Left. The Left accelerated its takeover during the 1930’s and FDR allowed Communists into the most sensitive positions of influence. The same “hippies/yippies” types of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s became teachers and PS grads. They are in the schools and government.

That is part of the reason I say that few know or understand the extreme seriousness of the threats.

Speak for yourself...

And precisely who is doing that, mikey?

You and the rest of your wannabes. You have taken a noble cause and warped it to shill for a system and a government that advocated and practiced it.
