A week to the day after the twin blasts shook the Boston Marathon, an 11-year-old Martinez boy still hospitalized from the bombings is expected to meet the Oakland A's. First baseman Brandon Moss, right fielder Josh Reddick and batting coach Tye Waller are expected to visit Aaron Hern on Monday. Reddick tweeted: "Brandon Moss and myself headed to children's hospital to help brighten some people's day! Hope we help. #BostonStrong" Monday morning. The team is in town to play a three-game series against the Red Sox. Aaron is still at Boston Children's Hospital, where he is recovering after the second...

Colorado authorities have identified the victims of a backcountry avalanche on Saturday as five experienced snowboarders and skiers who were participating in a community event promoting backcountry safety and gear. The Rocky Mountain High Backcountry Gathering's organizer, Joe Timlin, who worked as the Rocky Mountain sales manager for various snowboard brands, was among the deceased, according to the Clear Creek County Coroner's office. "I lost a very dear friend today," said Adam Schmidt, editor of Snowboard Colorado Magazine, one of the event's sponsors. "I helped Joe put this community event together. Everybody in the snowboard community here knew him, and...

In comments made to The Star and Metro Sports before the KC Catbackers Club meeting Tuesday in Overland Park, and to KCSP (610 AM) in an interview aired Wednesday morning, Snyder said college football "was in a bad place." "We've allowed it to be TV-driven, and allowed it to become more important to a university than it should be," Snyder said. "We're educational institutions, and what's really important is trying to enhance the lives of young people and give them guidance and direction to help themselves." In the radio interview, Snyder was asked if the game's state would have an...

Harry Reid today introduced legislation that would put new restrictions on purchase and ownership of pressure cookers. The legislation would require background checks and a 10 day waiting period for all purchases of these devices, including purchases of used pressure cookers at garage sales and pressure cooker fairs. Anyone whose name appears on the newly created register of the mentally ill would be ineligible to purchase the devices. The legislation also restricts the capacity of pressure cookers to be offered for sale. "Nobody needs a pressure cooker that is larger than 1.5 gallons," Sen. Reid said in a statement released...

A trio of Huskers combined for the eighth no-hitter in school history on Tuesday afternoon, as Kyle Kubat, Tyler Niederklein and Dylan Vogt held the No. 10 Arkansas Razorbacks hitless in a 3-0 Nebraska win in the first game of a doubleheader. It was the fourth combined no-hitter in school history and the first no-hitter since four Huskers no-hit Peru State on March 6, 1993. Tuesday was the first no hitter against a Division I program since April 5, 1981, when Anthony Kelley no-hit the Oklahoma Sooners.

Brooklyn Dodgers President Branch Rickey first met Jackie Robinson on Aug. 28, 1945. Rickey told Robinson that he wanted to sign the 26-year-old ballplayer and break the national pastime's color barrier. But for him to succeed, Rickey said, Robinson couldn't respond to the indignities that would be piled on him: "I'm looking for a ballplayer with guts enough not to fight back." Rickey then opened a book published in the 1920s, Giovanni Papini's "Life of Christ," and read Jesus' words: "But whoever shall smite thee on the cheek, turn to him the other also." Robinson knew the Gospel and knew...

I hadn't noticed this before, but why is it that golfers sometimes (or is it all the time) when their ball is near the hole pick up their ball, then mark the spot with a quarter(?), then place the ball back down then take their shot? Why not just proceed with their shot from the get-go?

I watch most NASCAR races. During every race I can remember, the sponsor of a race is mentioned at least while going to a commercial, and coming back from a commercial. The sponsor is usually mentioned at least a few dozen other times during the race. The winner of a race at Texas Motor Speedway is also presented a pair of pistols that he shoots, at the trophy presentation. I watched 90% of the NASCAR race today, and not ONCE did I hear who the sponsor was, NOT ONCE!!! I never saw a single NRA sign of any type. I...

Tiger Woods was three strokes off the lead in the Masters when he completed the second round at Augusta National Golf Club on Friday. But he began his third round five strokes behind the leader Jason Day after being assessed a two-stroke penalty on Saturday for an illegal drop on the 15th hole of the second round.

Did Tiger Woods' actions after he drenched his third shot on No. 15 Friday at Augusta result in him signing an incorrect scorecard, which would result in his automatic disqualification from the Masters? There was no definitive answer and a lot of speculation late Friday. So, while a conclusion has yet to be reached, let's walk through the events in question. After his round Woods said about his shot into the water on No. 15: "I went down to the drop area, that wasn't going to be a good spot, because obviously it's into the grain and it was a...

Don't Drop the Ball, Augusta On a day that so much attention was given to a rules infraction, it’s another rules infraction that everyone should be talking about. We all know that 14 year old Guan Tianlang, competing at a level far beyond his age, was assessed a 1-stroke penalty for slow play. While basically nobody liked this ruling or agreed with it, it was technically correct. USGA Rule 26 governs drops when a ball is in a water hazard. Per this rule, a player can replay the shot from “as nearly as possible from the spot from which the...

WAIANAE, Hawaii, - A shark won a struggle with a fisherman for a tuna off Hawaii but the fisherman came out of the struggle with a consolation prize -- a videotape of the battle. Isaac Brumaghim, 37, caught a kawakawa tuna while fishing from a kayak in the Pacific Ocean, 2 miles off Waianae, Hawaii -- but a 9-foot-long tiger shark grabbed the fish as Brumaghim tried to reel it in. The shark then bumped the boat and swam away with the fish, KHNL-TV, Honolulu, reported. "The shark made a circle, came around and ate the kawakawa under my boat,"...

To put this performance into perspective, consider that Guan finished his first career Masters round tied with five major champions and two strokes ahead of the defending champion, Bubba Watson. He should have been a nervous wreck, a golfing shambles. The sheer length of Augusta National was supposed to overwhelm Tianlang Guan, remind him that he is 14 years old, an eighth grader, a thin reed in a forest of pines. Instead, Guan rolled a 20-foot, pin-high putt into the cup on the 18th hole for a final birdie, giving him an impressive 1-over 73 in the first round Thursday....
