Wilmington: The Next Netflix Series?

This week, as accounts of the whistleblowers who blew the lid off the hampered investigations of the President’s crackhead son Hunter were made public, I imagined a writer making a pitch to producers for a dramatic program called Wilmington, a political version, if you will, of Dallas with more than a hint of the Godfather. Clearly, my proposed dramatization covers so much ground, it will have to be serialized. For one thing, there’s a very sordid background to the story. The family has a long history of corruption and drug use unhampered by legal prosecution. Informed by writers like Jonathan...

Black Mirror has finally returned to Netflix after a hard-to-believe four year hiatus sparked in part by COVID delays, but still, that’s an extremely long time. Now it’s returned with five new episodes and I’m going to do something I haven’t done in well, four years. Rank them. There is no good way to do this without some level of spoilers, so I would save reading this until you’ve watched them. However, if you want to skip the bad ones and watch the good ones, this may be helpful if you at least just glance over the ranking order.

Well, this might not come as a surprise, but Netflix’s password-sharing crackdown already appears to be working in the US. According to the data analytics company Antenna (via The Wall Street Journal), Netflix saw a huge spike in subscribers in the four days after it notified users about its paid sharing policies on May 23rd. While average daily signups rose to 73,000 during this window, marking a 102 percent increase over Netflix’s previous 60-day average, Antenna says the streamer also added 100,000 subscribers on both May 26th and May 27th. That’s more subscribers than Netflix raked in once the covid-related...

Taking the real historic phenomena of fasting girls who claimed they could survive without food that were reported throughout Ireland after the Great Irish Famine, an adaptation of a novel “The Wonder” is available on Netflix. The brief plot summary is an English nurse, Mrs. Elizabeth Wright, played by Florence Pugh, is hired to watch over a fasting girl, Anna O’Donnell, in Ireland. Mrs. Wright was with Florence Nightingale at Scutari during the Crimea War. An Irish reporter for the Daily Telegraph, Mr. William Bryne, shows up at the village to do his own investigating. The story has the typical...

The event from the striking union's Trans/Gender Non-Conforming Writers Subcommittee sought to improve visibility for these members both within the industry and the union. Picketing at Netflix on Thursday took a celebratory turn as trans and gender non-conforming writers hosted a block party-esque picket at the corner of Sunset Blvd. and Van Ness Ave. aimed at improving their visibility both within the industry at large and in their own guild. The event from the Writers Guild of America’s Trans/Gender Non-Conforming Writers Subcommittee, called “Trans Takeover Thursday,” featured a “mini ball,” honoring the ballroom tradition originating in queer communities of color...

Netflix Series Which Incorrectly Featured Cleopatra as Black Woman Gets Worst Audience Score in TV History The Netflix series about Cleopatra, which changed the race of the title character from Greek/Macedonian to an African black woman, has suffered the worst audience score in TV history. As The Daily Fetched reported last month, the government of Egypt has slammed Netflix for the portrayal, accusing them of falsely rating history for politics. The secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mostafa Waziri, said the Netflix show wrongly Featuring Cleopatra was a black woman represents a “falsification of Egyptian history and a blatant...

Controversial documentary Cleopatra just gave Netflix their “Bud Light” wakeup call…

Netflix’s “Cleopatra” documentary has turned into an epic disaster. The audience despises the “woke” show that absurdly portrays a fair-skinned Greek woman as an “African queen.” Adding fuel to the fire, critics have also slammed it, labeling the documentary a complete failure, falling even below the quality of cheesy afternoon soap operas. It’s an embarrassing flop that leaves you scratching your head, wondering why Netflix would humor Jada Pinkett Smith’s inner racist and air such utter trash. On the flip side, Elizabeth Taylor’s rendition of Cleopatra came remarkably close to capturing the essence of the legendary figure. Beauty Flashback: Elizabeth...

Netflix Series : The Diplomat

A friend of mine suggested I try Netflix's new series; The Diplomat, with Kerri Russell, and Rufus Seawell. It had an interesting plot and premise and tonight I decided to give it a try. In the first 10 minutes of this show they had managed to find a way to include every Diversity Demographic possible, including what appeared to be a non-binary character. Part of the plot concerns the President appointing a career Foreign Service official as the Ambassador to England, and she is female. As most know that plum job usually goes to a high political donor. In this...

Egypt has slammed Netflix for presenting Cleopatra as black in its new docudrama - accusing the streaming giant of 'falsifying Egyptian history'. Netflix had been accused of 'blackwashing' history by casting the black actress as the pharaoh in the new series about the Macedonian-Greek ruler. African Queens: Queen Cleopatra stars 37-year-old English actress Adele James as the titular character.

During his presidency, Barack Obama oversaw the decimation of hundreds of thousands of U.S. manufacturing jobs. Now, without a hint of irony, the former president has unveiled his latest Netflix docuseries titled Working, in which he explores American jobs and the changing nature of work for millions of Americans. Barack Obama stars in and narrates the series, which is set to debut May 17. In the trailer, which the former president released via Twitter on Thursday, he can be seen visiting families in their homes and places of work as they express their concerns about employment and their economic futures.

Netflix has announced it is ending its DVD rental service after 25 years. DVD rentals formed the basis of Netflix’s original business model when the company launched in 1998. It initially had 925 titles available, and the first it ever sent out was a copy of Tim Burton’s 1988 horror comedy Beetlejuice. Netflix’s rise helped cause the downfall of stores like Blockbuster, before it began transitioning into streaming in the mid-2000s. DVD rentals accounted for $126m (£101m) of Netflix’s $31.6bn (£25.4bn) revenue last year – equivalent to just 0.4 per cent. The company announced $8.18bn in revenue for the first...

An Egyptian lawyer has filed a case with the Public Prosecutor to close the Netflix platform after the trailer of “Queen Cleopatra" was released, which depicts the Greek historical figure as a black-skinned woman. According to Egypt Independent, Mahmoud al-Semary demanded that all legal measures be taken against those responsible for the documentary and the management of the streaming platform for its participation in “this crime.” He also called for an investigation and for Netflix to be blocked in Egypt. The complaint submitted against the streaming platform said that "most of what Netflix platform displays contradicts Islamic and societal values...

Egyptian experts have criticized Netflix for “blackwashing” its upcoming docu-series about Queen Cleopatra VII. Now, they’re taking action to see that the show never airs — by banning the streaming giant from the country completely. “African Queens: Queen Cleopatra” is narrated and executive produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, 51, and stars Adele James, 27, who is biracial, as the legendary queen of Egypt, whose specific race has long been the subject of historical dispute. Pinkett Smith previously explained that she wanted to be involved in the project because she “really wanted to represent Black women.” But Egyptologist Zahi Hawass, who...

Dr. Zahi Hawass, one of the most famous Egyptologists and the former Egyptian Minister of State for Antiquities Affairs, has criticized Netflix for its controversial decision to cast Cleopatra with a black actress in an upcoming docuseries. The new Netflix series, dubbed “Queen Cleopatra”, which is produced and narrated by the American actress Jada Pinkett Smith, has sparked fierce debate over the misrepresentation of history and representation in TV and media. Hawass, who is Egypt’s most recognizable archaeologist, decried the decision by Netflix to portray Cleopatra as being of black descent, pointing out that the historical figure “was Greek”. Zahi...

JTA — While the United States swung its door shut to most refugees during World War II, a young American in France saved thousands, including some of the 20th century’s defining artists and thinkers — such as Marc Chagall and Hannah Arendt — from the Nazis. The rescue mission of Varian Fry, which went largely unrecognized during his life, is the subject of Netflix’s new drama “Transatlantic,” launching Friday from “Unorthodox” creator Anna Winger. Starring Cory Michael Smith as Fry, the seven-episode “Transatlantic” aims to recreate his operation in Marseille after the Nazis defeated France and before the United States...

New Yorkers may soon be forced to pay more for their streaming subscriptions like Netflix and Hulu in a bid to stave off a major MTA fare hike. Democratic members of the New York state Assembly on Thursday submitted a budget proposal that would impose a 4% sales tax on popular video and audio streaming services. Other money-making schemes introduced in Albany include a fee on package deliveries and a surcharge on ride-hailing rides, the Wall Street Journal first reported. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said it needs an influx of $1 billion to keep subways, buses and commuter trains running,...

She can break a tie in the Senate but, apparently, Vice President Harris has no such voting power during Netflix viewing debates at home. “Right now, it’s definitely Netflix and chilling,” Doug Emhoff, the Georgetown University Law Center instructor and Harris’s husband, told Cosmopolitan of the couple’s favorite date night activity in an interview published Monday. “It’s hard to go out, so we’ll sit there and try to find something to watch,” Emhoff said, “and it takes so long to find something to watch, so it’s like, ‘Eh, let’s just go to bed.’ ” Fifty-eight-year-old Emhoff, who opened up to...

In the early hours of March 8, 2014, pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah sent Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 into air just before 12:45 a.m. local time. Everything was routine onboard the Boeing 777 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, China, as the plane readied to leave Malaysian airspace and fly towards Vietnam across the South China Sea. “Good night, Malaysia 370,” Shah tells air traffic controllers as they ready to relay communications duties to the Vietnamese.
