NY Democrats propose 4% tax on Netflix, Uber to fund MTA

New Yorkers may soon be forced to pay more for their streaming subscriptions like Netflix and Hulu in a bid to stave off a major MTA fare hike.

Democratic members of the New York state Assembly on Thursday submitted a budget proposal that would impose a 4% sales tax on popular video and audio streaming services.

Other money-making schemes introduced in Albany include a fee on package deliveries and a surcharge on ride-hailing rides, the Wall Street Journal first reported.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said it needs an influx of $1 billion to keep subways, buses and commuter trains running, without resorting to a planned 5.5% fare hike that would boost the price of a single ride from the current $2.75 to $3.

New Yorkers voted for Democrats. Either they are hideous stupid and didn’t expect more taxes or they want more taxes.

Gas taxes pay for roads. NY wants indoctrination viewers to pay for subways.

These clowns are insane. What is the correlation between watching TV and riding the filthy subway?

Why aren’t they charging the MTA riders for the cost of their rides?

Charging Uber passengers doesn’t make any sense.

And Netflix? Is that because MTA riders are streaming videos during their commutes?

Hey New Yorkers. Keep on electing those Democrats and you might soon realize they suck at governing.

Why should MTA riders lay for their own costs when they can instead USE OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY? /sarc

The former has money and the latter wants it.

My friends we’ll never get a flat tax. The closest we can come would be a National sales/consumption tax. We’re all against internet taxes-that’s in our ‘no to all taxes’ DNA. Still the way to a national sales(FAIR) tax would be one on all consumption including sales done on the internet.

Imagine lowering the tax by eliminating entire departments. Everyone benefits, especially low income earners who will have more say in their consumption choices.

No sales taxes on rice and beans. None on IRA investments until the portfolio reaches half a million. That’s it HSA’s would help.

Hey I have an idea. Why not crack down on people who don’t pay? Oh wait... that disproportionally impacts “people of color”?? Gosh, well we can’t do that.

NOTHING like taxing the NON-users of a service for that service to remain solvent.

Dems get everything backwards.

Exactly. Raise the MTA fares if they need raising.

Don't penalize people who don't even use the MTA by taxing them on unrelated things.

BTW, I ride the MTA almost every day. They deliver a pretty good service and I would still ride them if the fares increased. I wouldn't be happy about it but it would make sense for me to pay the higher fare instead of charging some other guy more to stream Netflix videos or ride in an Uber!

Makes no sense.

New York is a million or two residents smaller than Florida, spends TWICE as much, and the infrastructure is still falling apart.

Why not a tax just on politicians' salaries?

Makes more sense than Uber or Netflix.

I’d like to see big new taxes on NY Times, Wall St Journal and Prius sales/excise taxes.
