For Evolving Brains, a ‘Paleo’ Diet Full of Carbs
The New York Times ^ | AUG. 13, 2015 | Carl Zimmer

You are what you eat, and so were your ancient ancestors. But figuring out what they actually dined on has been no easy task.

There are no Pleistocene cookbooks to consult. Instead, scientists must sift through an assortment of clues, from the chemical traces in fossilized bones to the scratch marks on prehistoric digging sticks.

Scientists have long recognized that the diets of our ancestors went through a profound shift with the addition of meat. But in the September issue of The Quarterly Review of Biology, researchers argue that another item added to the menu was just as important: carbohydrates, bane of today’s paleo diet enthusiasts.

In fact, the scientists propose, by incorporating cooked starches into their diet, our ancestors were able to fuel the evolution of our oversize brains.

Roughly seven million years ago, our ancestors split off from the apes. As far as scientists can tell, those so-called hominins ate a diet that included a lot of raw, fiber-rich plants.

All I know is that when they compare pre-argricultural human remains to humans after argriculture began the differences are startling.

Before agriculture, people were taller, they had no cavities or dental disease, bones were thicker. Once agriculture set in people got shorter, show lots of cavities and diseases, they see signs of arthritis and stuff in bones.

The best diet is high in saturated animal fats and protein, veggies and a little carb, little natural sugar in fruits.

This story attempts to conflate fire and cooking and the increase in the amylase gene and the increase in brain size. The article is fairly honest in including this:

“At some point hominins began to cook meat, but exactly when they invented fire is a question that inspires a lot of debate. Humans were definitely making fires by 300,000 years ago, but some researchers claim to have found campfires dating back as far as 1.8 million years.”

And this:

“They may be right, but it’s not a slam-dunk,” said Greg Wray, an evolutionary biologist at Duke University. “The timing is not well resolved enough.” There is still considerable uncertainty about when fire was invented and when amylase gene copies evolved, Dr. Wray noted.”

So, the entire article is pretty much BS.

The difference in dog and wolf amylase gene number, however, is key in determining when my dog’s ancestors diverged from wolves(even if she thinks she is one).

Yes and we know that the Palio diet works because it is proven by real life experiences of body builders.

If you work out really hard, the palio diet is exactly right.

You dont have to work out really hard.

Proteins and fats keep you satisfied longer and don’t spike your bloodsugar. This keeps inflammation and insulin down, which is what causes damage to arteries. Eating mostly proteins and fats and keeping sugar down will not cause one to get hungry later and eat crap in an attempt to stayfull.

They take a long time to break down and use up. They keep you running on an even keel all day.

Carbs on the other hand do the opposite of everything above. Carbs are why you are hungry an hour or so after you eat. We don’t run well on carbs.

Okay. It's actually pretty easy to prove this using a bunch of unrelated techniques. One example is to compare the human and chimp genomes and count the numbers of random mutations in otherwise identical strands of DNA. Since they crop up at a more or less constant rate you can get a good estimate on the number of generations since we split off. And it happens to match fossil evidence almost perfectly.

Ok, I’m a science geek so I’ll bite here.

Your proof is evidence of the time frame humans appear in history, and I should have been more clear about this, but still don’t show one day there was a monkey, next day there was a human.
Why couldn’t it be that God created animals, and later humans and that we happen to have similar DNA? Isn’t there very little variance of DNA of all life on earth?
Also how is it Humans have self awareness, and a “soul” that encompasses who we are, and apes have never developed these traits, even after millions of years exposure to humans.
Another question; According to Darwin theory, don’t creatures “evolve” to propagate the DNA, or carry the torch so to speak, and the weaker species they evolved from die off due to natural selection? Why aren’t all apes evolved into humans of some sort?
While I do believe life adapts to it’s environment, and passes those changes to offspring, I just can’t see a wholly different creature happening because of environment.
Also I don’t believe this mystery has been settled by science even though their very brightest atheists have been wanting to find it for 75 years.
What I do see is more scientists agreeing with the fact that science is allowing us to better see the beauty of God’s work.
My belief in God is based in a common sense argument.

As long as Evolution, and Creationism are still theories, I have to go with Creationism, and believe in God.
If I have made the choice to believe in God, and I’m wrong what are the consequences? If I choose to shun God, and believe His word is not the truth, and I’m wrong the end consequences are much worse. An eternity of much worse. Common Sense right?

I didn’t read the whole thing but being the NYT I assume that whatever conclusions they come to are just an expression of their ideology. Leftists love carbs and hate paleo dieters just like leftists love light rail and hate Tea partiers. Their predilections all come from the same place and are as predictable as clockwork.

Absolutely right, FRiend! And with ketosis kicking in, the waistline grows slimmer. I'm convinced this is the way that mankind was designed to eat. The HFLC lifestyle is effective.

Carbs on the other hand do the opposite of everything above. Carbs are why you are hungry an hour or so after you eat. We don’t run well on carbs.

Tell that to marathoners and others who exert enormous amounts of energy at sustained rates - and also "carb-load" prior to competing. I love meat - especially the kind that used to say "moo", but my body craves carbs and as long as I remain active, I suffer no ill effects and actually have fewer digestive issues when I "balance" by using carbs for about 50% of my calories.

There are all sorts of schools and it should be noted that one can do serious damage to the kidneys w/o enough carb intake. I guess it's a bit like cholesterol and salt - some folks thrive on them (I need and like a ot of salt to remain happy and can eat a lot of "Cholesterol laden" foods w/o problems while others develop/exacerbate health issues. Different systems and physical activities dictate "proper" diets.

Prove that man materialized from nothing in one day or arrived from space. We truly know nothing but those theories are more ludicrous than evolution right now.

We are 99% identical in DNA and have a nearly identical body structure to chimps. We are also finding bits of evidence of early man that no longer exist. So evolution is the only theory we have any material evidence of.

However, even if evolution is proven, I still dont believe we know even 1% of the overall picture...
