Motley Fool ^ | August 31, 2014 | Rich Smith

Posted on 08/31/2014 9:34:25 AM PDT by lbryce

Earlier this year, CBS News spotlighted a growing shortage of .22-caliber ammunition. "One of the most popular and common" -- and cheapest -- calibers of ammo for hunters and target shooters alike, CBS reports that .22 shells are in short supply these days. Interviewing one supplier, CBS reported that while as recently as two years ago it was still possible to buy .22-caliber ammunition "by the pallet-load... now they're putting restrictions on how much you can get and how you get that ammo."

Retailers are shooting blanks This is a problem from ammunition retailers -- and for gun owners as well. Statistically speaking, 24%-45% of Americans own guns either for self-defense or sporting purposes. But getting the ammo to load into those guns is becoming a bit of a trick.

Yep. That’s it. 36gr. Pretty decent ammo too. A lot better than the Remington Golden Bullets, anyway.

Neither of the two Walmarts near me have had .22 ammo in over a year. And I check regularly.

” Brown Bear 7.62x39mm rifle rounds (standard for an AK-47) are now entirely unavailable on AIM Surplus. All you can get today is cheap Russian Wolf-brand ammo ... that costs a staggering $230 for a box of 1000 rounds.”

A giveaway that the Fool is actually a fool!

This article reminds me of Geraldo Rivera, and some gangster’s (I can’t remember which) vault. Nothing there.

BO, (before Obama) that was $99 for 1000 rounds.
Surplus brass cased .308 was $99 for 1000 rounds, now it is like $600

“Still waiting for his explaination why the first guy didn’t see as much as he wanted.”

Because the guy before him bought up all of it, and the resupply chain is not tuned for larger amounts.

Supply and demand. That’s it. Demand exceeds supply, and supply will not be increased further unless it can be planned for suitable amatorization (sp?).

A friend just returned from Canada and said there are piles of 22 in the stores at almost the old prices.

The solution is a significant increase in permanent production capacity at great cost, in response to a temporary bump in demand which will likely be followed by a long term slump - a net loss for ammo makers.

That solution being financially untenable, run the existing factories 24/7 until demand wanes.
