The .22 Long Rifle cartridge is the most popular cartridge in existence. Every year, billions of .22 LR cartridges are purchased and shot. It is popular for both target shooting and hunting, and is used by many for self defense. It has been used by the military establishments of most countries, mostly as a training round, but also in combat. The .22 LR has been used to kill most animals from the smallest, including some insects, on up to elephants. The .22 Long Rifle is derived from the .22 Short cartridge, both are rimfire cartridges which use a heeled bullet which...

About once a week, I visit a local Walmart to monitor ammunition prices. This time, there was a significant change. Walmart rolled back the price of some bulk-packed .22 LR ammunition. The product was Federal Automatch, 40 grain, in a 325 bulk pack. The price was $18.97 or 5.8 cents per cartridge. The price had been $21.16, or 6.5 cents per cartridge. This is roughly a 10% reduction in the price. Most days, this correspondent will look at ammunition prices online. They are not quite as good an indicator because shipping costs must be included. Everyone online now charges state...

  • .22LR: The Most Popular Bullet In America?

While many other popular calibers, including 9mm, have risen in price during the great ammo shortage of 2021; .22 LR has increased but not nearly as significantly. It is now possible to find a box of 400 rounds (Browning HP 36 grains 1280 fps) for less than $140 – just about $0.03 a round according to a recent survey of offerings found on CheaperThanDirt.com. When compared to the 5.56 NATO or .223 cartridges for the AR-15, which can be well over a $1 per round, it is easy to see why some shooters are buying an AR chambered for .22...

.22 ammunition available at Yuma Walmart on 9 July, 2021 This correspondent was in a Walmart in Yuma, Arizona on 9 July 2021. Visits to Walmart have been regular, but sparse, about one every two to three weeks. When in Walmart, a quick look at the ammunition display is taken to see if there are any significant changes. There has been very little ammunition displayed for over a year. Common calibers have been in short supply, especially .22 rimfire. It was with considerable surprise these four boxes of .22 ammunition, 2 – 325 round boxes of Federal and 2- 333 round boxes...

I am interested in buying a .22 pistol for carry and target shooting. I have been looking at the Beretta M9 22, but recently was impressed with a Taurus model. Any recommendations? Any ones to stay away from?

Volquartsen's .22LR Featherweight - The original function of the basic Ruger 10-22 was reliable shooting with passable accuracy. Over time more specialized models appeared, such as heavy-barreled target versions for utmost accuracy, and lightweight take-down designs for portability. Gunmaker Scott Volquartsen’s genius was to find a way to combine light weight with high accuracy. His UltraLite .22 is a featherweight even by rimfire standards, with the barreled action massing under 2.5 pounds, and the lightest of the stocks adding less than a pound to that. The lighter weight is mainly attributed to the materials used for the barrel: a carbon-fiber...

Ever since I was a little boy, I can remember spending many days with my grandpa. His name was Ray. It was actually Walter Ray, but he simply went by Ray. I would spend summers with him at the beach fishing, digging clams and an occasional trip shooting. I can still remember the smell of his den. It always had the aroma of Hoppe’s #9, the gun-cleaning solvent. He had a desk set up to reload, and his rifles were stacked in a gun cabinet. It was in this room I learned many things. I learned to assemble cartridges, how...

Youtube shooting sensation Erick of IV8888 has a strange little CMMG .22 caliber machine gun. - This little rig here looks like something that almost belongs in a Kurt Russel (Snake Plissken) movie. This CMMG 22 upper sports a 4 inch barrel with KG made Swarm, this is an all-titanium can. A special firing pin was also used instead of the standard which usually breaks after 1300 rounds. Basically, this is a torture test, they're going to run it to see what happens. This will also be a test for the suppresssors as well. All loaded up with 25-round shot...
  • 9mm vs .22LR

Which is better for Self-Defense, Hunting or Plinking? The 9mm and the 22LR are two popular ammunition out in the market. They are different in respect to cartridge sizes. Comparing the two in a head to head is easy when you’re only viewing the size of the caliber. The 9mm is bigger than the 22 round. The .22 rounds have much less energy than 9mm rounds, the powder load is smaller. When fired has less acceleration and kinetic energy. Which means the penetration and knock down power is not in the same class as the 9mm caliber. However, that doesn’t...

Putting down an aggressive hog (400 lbs) doesn't require a heavy caliber rifle. Watch Jim Thomas displays excellent markmanship while taking down a 400 pound wild hog. What is surprising is that Jim was only using a subsonic .22LR bullet. To be exact he was sporting a suppressed Ruger 10/22 rifle equipped with an ATNX-Sight for night vision. Like a seasoned hunter Jim waited for the hogs to show and loitering at the bait area. From 50 yards away Jim spots the big hog among others that had been giving them problems on his property in the past. With great...

Have you ever shot long-range with a .22-caliber rifle? If you’re into long range shooting then you understand the many variables that can affect your ability of making an accurate shot from way out there. Having an accurate rifle is a must. The best ammunition certainly helps, but you better watch that wind drift. Power drops off quickly and those bullets drop in a hurry. From 600 yard out with a slight breeze, its not consistently accurate. 22plinkster hit it 4 out of 20 shots. At 500 yard out with minimal or no wind and with the right setup 22plinkster...

How good of a shot are you? Do you think you can hit a drop of water with your pistol? Youtuber 22plinkster is an excellent shooter, he takes on this challenge. 22Plinkster uses a Victory 22LR pistol and with the slow motion technology to validate the hit. From 20 feet away 22Plinkster sets a water bottle upside down with dripping water in front of a silhouette target. It takes about 4 or 5 tries to pulls off the shot, totally amazing marksmanship. See the full shooting a drop of water footage here.

The .22 LR bubble is over. With the Trump Presidency, gun owners are no longer worried that ammunition might be hard to find in the indefinite future. I visited the WalMart in Northern Dallas on the corner of Marsh Lane  and Frankford Rd. It has had more ammunition available, at lower prices, than the others I have visited in Arizona and Texas. As seen in the photo, take on December 20, 2017, Federal bulk packs of 550 rounds of 36 grain high velocity .22 Long Rifle cartridges were priced at $19.94.  According to my calculator 1994/550 is 3.62 cents...

The new .22 rimfire plant in Lewiston, Idaho, is on line. Vista Outdoors owns the CCI and Federal rimfire brands. They have increased production for both brands by 20 percent. With end of the Obama administration, the .22 ammunition bubble is deflating. Most stores have ammunition available. Prices are coming down. From the Lewiston Tribune, November 10th, 2017: Parts of Vista's approach have worked well, such as investing in infrastructure and preserving market share, Metz said.Vista recently debuted a new, 37,000-square-foot, $35 million rimfire ammunition plant near the Lewiston-Nez Perce County Regional Airport, which has resulted in what company officials...

The drought has been lifted, for almost half a decade, the long-standing 22 Lone Rifle ammunition is finally behind us. Wal-Mart announced this internally that any and all restrictions on purchasing 22 ammo in bulk have been removed. Up until about a year ago, 22LR was reasonably difficult to find in both bulk and inexpensively. Shared across Facebook and other social media, the new policy was announced to managers, loss prevention, and sales clerks. The new policy is a welcome change, especially for this in more rural areas where Wal-Mart was the major store, if not only, purveyors of ammunition....

Although the brand dates to the middle of the 19th Century, the Henry Repeating Arms company that we know of today was founded in 1996 by a father-and-son team. Originally located in Brooklyn, it started production of .22 rimfire lever-action carbines in 1997. Ten years later, the headquarters moved to Bayonne, N.J. Around that time, Henry added a large production facility in Wisconsin, having bought out a major parts supplier. The two factories together add up to over 400 employees on nearly 250,000 square feet of floor space. In 20 years, Henry Repeating Arms produced more than 2.3 million...

Razorback 22LR Beltfed Conversion for the AR15 rifle – Credits go to LSM1213 Tired of stacking up old magazines on your plinker? Lakeside Guns has the solution for you — a beltfed .22 LR. Correct, the Lakeside Machine has a clever transformation for AR-15 style rifles, called the Razorback. This altered upper receiver allows you go through rimfire ammunition by means of a belt. Maybe best of all, it requires no alteration to the lower receiver to slap one on. In general, the Razorback gives off an impression of being for the most part a novelty but be that as...

Wall-Mart .22 rimfire has been uncommon for three years now. When President Obama pushed for more infringements on the Second Amendment, starting in 2013, the demand for .22 rimfire skyrocketed. Instead of raising prices on the ammunition sufficiently to bring demand down to reasonable levels, manufacturers tried to keep prices stable to earn customer good will. It failed as a strategy. With the demand so high, less public entrepreneurs purchased all the .22 they could obtain, then offered it over the Internet, at gun shows, and other venues, at three to four times the price purchased. The producers stayed with...
