In his new bookThe Liberty Amendments: Restoring the American Republicnationally syndicated radio host Mark Levin, who served as chief of staff in the Reagan Justice Department, argues that the Constitution should be amended to put tax day and election day back to back.
I would move tax day to the day before election day, Levin said in an interview on CNSNews.coms Online With Terry Jeffrey.
I think this is very important, because if youll notice, election day and tax day are about as far apart as they can get, like seven months apart, said Levin. So were voting on the promises of politicians rather than the reality of what these politicians have done.

We don’t need amendment to do that.
Neither tax day nor election day are set in the Constitution.
It would be easier to do it without an amendment
Those who pay taxes already get it.. it’s the half that doesn’t something needs to be done with.
Better yet, via executive order, simply do away with withholding.
Every taxpayer writes a check, instead of having your money surreptitiously siphoned out of your paycheck.
It wouldn’t take long for the message to stick.
I don’t think that could be done by Executive Order, as far as I know. Not that it would be a bad idea.
You are probably correct. Legislation would be required.

Mark Levin says things designed to get people thinking but sometimes the way he says it is designed to grab attention.
Changing the dates of the election and tax day would be far easier and require less political muscle than a Constitutional Amendment. But saying “Constitutional Amendment” will grab attention to the idea that if people remembered tax day when they vote maybe they would vote different.
Maybe a few, but how many are receiving a “refund” that someone else paid for these days? Those people are going to vote to keep that gravy train flowing.
Restoration of our republic is his goal, and state derived amendments are the only means to do that.
No doubt.
But I think there are enough of us “pulling the wagon” that if sufficiently motivated could change the hearts and minds of the political class.
Do you realize how few there are of us? I mean, well-informed, motivated citizens?
The vast majority of taxpayers are focused on what high school players will sign with LSU or Ohio State. Or who the couples on Dancing With the Stars are. Or making it to work on time tomorrow and keeping a job.
If we could ever get that group motivated, then things would change.
We don’t organize. Sure there are groups here and there but they do what? Hold a rally once in a while, host a blog, publish their rankings of members of Congress?
All pitifully meaningless. No wonder the leftists laugh at us.
We need to start organizing for real. We need a Freedom Clubs of America with 400 chapters. We need 10 million members giving dues to their local, state and national org.
We need it to branch off with all kinds of associated organizations. We need to support our own businesses, we need our own media etc etc
Why are their channels like Current, Pivot, Bridges-TV, CCTV4 from China, RFD and other things nobody watches when a conservative channel (lets say News Talk Network) would probably draw a bigger audience than a limp wristed FNC?
The GOP or a third party would love the support of an organization that could raise $100 million in a primary.
Forget these piddling one-issue organizations, forget the social vs fiscal crap. Forget dividing conservatives into fiefdoms.
We are both social and fiscally conservative and we believe America can do better than this cultural rot. We won’t need to play word games if conservatives would stop letting the left, the libertarians, the social liberals taunt us and drive wedges and divide us up into different groups.
They don’t have to join and we don’t have to pander to every group and organization that claims to be on our side even while tearing apart the base.
The government does such a great job protecting the other amendments, right?
I get his point. He wants people to vote for their interests but he is advocating something completely stupid. Its like killing an ant with a hit and run.
He means division of power once again as per the framer’s design.
It would be much saner to try and get Congress to change tax day or election day. It would be more productive to get the states to cut back on early voting and absentee voting and to purge the records for every election.
A Constitutional Amendment to set the day of an election and tax collection is simply meant to draw attention.
A summary of all his proposed amendments. The tax day thing isn't mentioned but it must be a (small) part of the taxation amendment.
As I suspected the lame 17th amendment repeal is on his list too. It benefits the my liberty to have the electorate for one of the most powerful positions in the country reduced to a few thousand politicians? NOPE! Mixing lame-brained crap like that in with good ideas only undermines his efforts.
Shouldn’t we just repeal the 16th Amendment instead?
Bingo! Bad idea IMO. The takers, the people who get obamaphones and such, will vote to keep the gravey train running. You can be sure there will always be new perks in the pipeline.
You are correct, but I think you miss the point. Many of those who do pay taxes allow themselves to get all off track on other things than the size of govt by election day. Also, this would put coverag of tax day right into the election cycle as well.
“simply do away with withholding.”
I’ve been pushing this for years. It would cause a tax revolt. I once asked a liberal friend how much he made. He said, “Well, I take home -—dollars.” I told him I didn’t care what he “took home,” I wanted to know how much he made. He didn’t know the before with holding amount. He’s very Conservative now.
So those who received refund checks would feel grateful?
Not a good idea as Tax Day = Pay Day in Obama’s world. With all the tax credits the Democrats want to hand out tax refunds are a major source of income for the 47%.
