Study supports contested 35-year-old predictions, shows that observable novae are just 'tip of the iceberg'

Almost 35 years ago, scientists made the then-radical proposal that colossal hydrogen bombs called novae go through a very long-term life cycle after erupting, fading to obscurity for hundreds of thousands of years and then building back up to become full-fledged novae once more. A new study is the first to fully model the work and incorporate all of the feedback factors now known to control these systems, backing up the original prediction while bringing new details to light. Published this week in the journal Nature Astronomy, the study confirms that the novae we observe flashing throughout the universe represent just a few percent of these cataclysmic variables, as they are known, with the rest "hiding" in hibernation...

Cataclysmic binary systems occur when a star like our Sun -- a yellow dwarf -- is being cannibalized by a white dwarf, a dead star. The white dwarf builds up a critical layer of hydrogen that it steals from the yellow dwarf, and that hydrogen explodes as a gigantic bomb. This explosion produces a burst of light that makes the white dwarf star up to 1 million times brighter than the Sun for a period of time that can last from a few days to a few months...

Further, the study showed that almost all the novae we observe today occur near the beginning of a binary system's life as opposed to the end...

Nope, still no micronovas.

Hmmm. Bombs, dwarves, nova (means “no go” in Spanish). Very triggering article. Too many microaggressions. Total rewrite!

Also, yellow and white are the only shades mentioned.

“Also, yellow and white are the only shades mentioned.”

But, it does say the whites cannibalize the yellows so it fits the critical race theory paradigm.

could not be any more poorly written. Right from the beginning one is left wondering what they are talking about.

And, they probably serve it with some kind of red sauce.

Well don’t you think that before they start talking about Hydrogen Bombs that they should prepare you for what they are talking about? Like outer space or something? It appears they are not talking about man made bombs. I don’t know because I was too frustrated reading the except to even click on the article.

I was not trying to insult you personally.

Hmmm. Dead stars in binary with yellow dwarfs. Like Jupiter or Saturn w.r.t. Sol? Conceivably whites in hibernation? Oh well, I'm gonna die anyway.

This kind of supernova is apparently the standard candle that was used to calculate the expansion rate of the Universe. The Hydrogen builds up until a critical point is reached where the Hydrogen is hot and dense enough for fusion to occur. That initial explosion sets up a shock wave which detonates the remaining hydrogen. From what I’ve read it blasts the star into small bits.
