The Problem with a 5G Phone
YouTube ^ | December 19, 2018 | Dave Lee / Dave2D / D2D

The best 5G phone is still going to be limited by 5G infrastructure in 2019. The cheapest 5G phone will still be very expensive compared to a 4G enabled version. Is 5G even worth it in 2019?

[Civ's comment: Dave2D is geekier perhaps than most, has some fussy quirks (that's probably a little unfair), but he starts his vids, gets to the point, covers a lot of ground, signs off fast, and has the best overall presentation on tech that I've seen on 'Tube. He really nails **** down in this one.]

With so many public hotspots, I rarely use my 4G connection.

Doesn't the 5G operate at a height frequency than a micorwave? I don't want that high of a frequency near my head but I don't have reception any way.

The “promise” of 5G is a lie.

It won’t work inside concrete and steel buildings without a repeater on every floor.

The required density of towers is more than people will tolerate.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, actually needs it. Who needs 1gbs on a phone?

5G benefits only the surveillance state.

Your wireless in your house is microwaving you. 5G uses millimeter waves, which are worse in some ways. It’s the same as the airport body scanners.

Ain’t that the truth.

It is really going to disenfranchise rural folks. For at least 50 years or more it will not be “available” anywhere outside of larger city limits because they are NOT going to spend the money to build all those extra needed rural towers. Yet, you can bet that they will charge the same rate for those with no 5G service as they do for those who will have the signal. “one size fits all” service contracts.

“5G service not available in some regions” will be a huge huge gross understatement...

Be Glad. Using these things is like standing next to a microwave oven operating with the door open.

Now... There are engineers here who claim that the wattage is so low that this is no more a concern than what we already deal with on a daily basis. But I am afraid they are not factoring in the human nature of greed.

At some point when these relay towers cannot quite reach each other because they refuse to spend the money to build more, they are indeed going to boost the hell out of the wattage so that they do reach each other. And the government is going to let them do it in the “best interest of the public” and backdoor lobbying. Then this safety factor is going to change greatly from what is currently explained or assumed.

Us rural folks are already very lucky to have carriers even come maintain what they have in place now, let alone spend the extra money to supply just a “few folks” with the extra needed towers, service, and maintenance of...

Nope, most rural towers are T1 fed.Cell providers lease channels from the tower owner and they’re not going away anytime soon.

One of the commercials running on the radio talks of 1 tower being able to serve “hundreds of square miles.” Of course there is “line of sight” to take into account but either way that is quite the transmitter. Maybe it will smoke birds out of the sky better than the windmills...

“It is really going to disenfranchise rural folks. “

No loss.

You want to see a tower in every-other section of land?

Multi gigabit wireless for phones is overkill.

Some stationary equipment might be able to make use of it in the cities, but those are all cabled in a dense lattice of fiber.

But not 4G. Or 3G. Only 5G.
