Steve Forbes: US can beat China in 5G without becoming like China
Fox News ^ | 03/19/2019 | Steve Forbes

China’s aggressive push to dominate 5G wireless technology has given rise to calls for the U.S. government to take over the development of a national 5G network. In fact, there is no reason to panic.

American companies are rising to the 5G challenge. Socialism and crony capitalism will only undermine U.S. progress in the race to 5G.

The success of tech companies like Apple and Microsoft is emblematic of what American innovation and its competitive spirit can accomplish. The companies that have changed the world and kept America at the cutting edge have rarely if ever been the spawn of government. When politicians in Washington team up with special interests, it generally distorts competition and impedes groundbreaking innovation.

Fifth generation, or 5G, wireless technology is of cosmic importance and is one of the most significant high-tech breakthroughs ever. It is elemental to what some see as the Fourth Industrial Revolution – not merely upgrading current technology, but enabling a revolution with new technology.

The speed and processing power of 5G wireless technology will turn the futuristic visions of smart cities, smart agriculture, telemedicine, autonomous vehicles, and so much more into reality. Within the coming decade, businesses small and large will essentially have to have 5G access to compete and succeed.

With the stakes so high, President Trump is hearing calls from aides and outside interests to push for more government control in building out our 5G network.

Some Trump administration officials are counseling that beating China to the punch in 5G leadership is so crucial that the federal government should build a nationwide wholesale 5G network. In essence, they are saying that in order to beat China we have to become like China.

This myopic and misbegotten advice ignores a rather crucial fact: Private sector wireless providers are already investing in and creating the national 5G network. America’s pre-eminent high-tech network construction leaders, Verizon and AT&T, already have 5G projects underway across the country.

U.S. wireless providers, who won the race to 4G without government assistance, ask only that they be allowed to invest and innovate under free-market policies that minimize regulatory red tape and expense. Bringing politicians and bureaucrats into the mix is a surefire way to gum up the process of deploying 5G.

I used to like Forbes; he turned his empire over to Northeast liberals and his editorials are all pap. Forbes Mag used to have good stock picks but now all they do is cover movie stars and a list of billionaires.

RE: Still not sure WTH 5G is!!

Why not?

The G in this 5G means it’s a generation of wireless technology. While most generations have technically been defined by their data transmission speeds, each has also been marked by a break in encoding methods, or “air interfaces,” that make it incompatible with the previous generation.

1G was analog cellular. 2G technologies, such as CDMA, GSM, and TDMA, were the first generation of digital cellular technologies. 3G technologies, such as EVDO, HSPA, and UMTS, brought speeds from 200kbps to a few megabits per second. 4G technologies, such as WiMAX and LTE, were the next incompatible leap forward, and they are now scaling up to hundreds of megabits and even gigabit-level speeds.

5G brings three new aspects to the table: greater speed (to move more data), lower latency (to be more responsive), and the ability to connect a lot more devices at once (for sensors and smart devices).

That’s it in a nutshell. The details are of course complicated.

Where I come from ‘5G’ is the abbreviated version of ‘5 thousand dollars’.

So you are not alone on that.

That was pretty damn good and written in English :)

From thousands and thousands of words, that’s all it took to get a good general understanding of it.

I guess they have to fill pages.

Why are some people talking about 5G as if it is some kind of demonic possession that takes over your soul?

It would be cool if cell towers could actually be 5G wifi transmitters so homes could essentially become wireless.

Probably the best thing the Trump administration can do to ensure we maintain our 5G advantage is to get his FTC to settle their lawsuit against Qualcomm and realize that they are entitled to the royalties that Apple owes them. The FTC is trying to put the best 5G company we have out of business based on the ridiculous argument that they are a monopoly for modem chips.

That's if we even get 5G. We need to address concerns about the health issues of widespread use of 28, 38 and 60 GHz millimeter wave frequency ranges first.

That's a fair concern. Current widespread frequency ranges appear to drive millennials crazy. There must be a link, how else to explain this nutty generation of young people who embrace Ocasio-Cortez and other dumb "leaders".

Does this mean 30 foot Towers every 1/4 mile? Current Cell Towers are too far awsy.

There's no high speed Internet out here in the country where I live (except for satellite, which sucks and is way overpriced).

I have a wireless hotspot from Consumer Cellular that acts as a cell modem to deliver the Internet to me. Yes, it isn't the fastest, but it beats satellite hands down.

Been there done that prior to the ability to get cable internet. Hotspots are slow for streaming and are costly over 10gigs of data per month. I envision high power 5G repeaters atop telephone poles. Fast data and cheaper.
