Explanation: This night was so serene you could see Orion rise downwards. The unusual spectacle was captured in this single-exposure image, featuring a deep sky around the famous constellation of Orion that appeared both above -- and reflected in -- a peaceful lake in the Gyirong Valley of Tibet, China. Taken last year at this time, the three belt stars of Orion can be seen lined up almost vertically above and below the Himalayan Mountains. The complex Orion Nebula can be seen to the belt stars' right, while the red-glowing circular structure surrounding Orion is Barnard's Loop. Also, the bright red star Betelgeuse is doubly visible on the image left, while bright blue Rigel appears twice on the image right. Familiar Orion is becoming increasingly visible as Winter (Summer) descends on the Northern (Southern) hemisphere.

Pictures like this always make me pine for my youth. I live in the city but when I was a boy the stars were so much more numerous. Now the night lights blot them out and you have to go deep into the country to see them well.
I remember the night sky on various pheasant hunting trips to N.W. Kansas, out in the middle of nowhere. Brilliant stars and no surface/city lights to dilute them........You could see every single one....
They have switched to LED street lights next to my house. They are blinding at night.
When I’m out in the area where I’m from, it’s a whole different sky compared with Grand Rapids, which isn’t a huge city; with all the suburbs (and that would go out a long way) there’s something in the area of a million people.
Pretty Picture, but, in the minds of freedom-loving Tibetans, Tibet is not part of China. Just sayin’.
Once again, thank you for posting these beautiful pictures, Sunken Civ! :-)
Great pic, though only possible through the long exposure of the camera. The eye cannot detect most of the faint reds in the night sky. The Orion nebula for instance, looks green through a telescope with maybe a hint of red with good optics and proper breathing. Still an amazing snapshot of what surrounds us!
I see a really nice, lovely SMILE!
My pleasure! And I wholeheartedly agree, Tibet is not China.
Thanks Textide.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Orion in sky dark enough to see Barnard’s Loop. Beautiful.
