*How can you be a lover of Freedom, and exalt a monarchy?*

Apart from the fact that monarchy’s at least as good a guarantor of the liberties of ordinary people, there’s the fact that I am a Christian.

No King but Jesus.

Having said that, heartfelt congratulations to the Windsor family. It is always a blessed thing when another precious human being, made in the image and likeness of the One Who created us all, is born, no matter the status or station of their family.

For many Americans, the British monarchy and class system mean little more than mid-brow BBC costume dramas, but in truth the British system has some dismal effects in the real world.

Ambitious and talented Brits without a class pedigree and connections commonly find that their best career opportunities are out of country, especially in the egalitarian US. Many of our scientific and technical breakthroughs thus have a large contribution from Britain and from British expatriates.

Moreover, the House of Windsor has a sorry record when British and US national interests are taken into account. If Edward had been king during WW II instead of being forced out by the politicians and security services due to his affair with Wallis Simpson, a British surrender or negotiated peace with Hitler would have been almost certain.

Similarly, the British monarchy's investments overseas have often led to the compromise or weakening of British and US interests. Soviet, Chinese, and Third World leaders learned that menacing or boosting the royal family's money was a way to influence British national policy.

Also, Queen Elizabeth has generally aligned with the Tory "wets" (the British version of RINOs) and did not at all like Margaret Thatcher or her policies. The smarmy and snakey Tony Blair was her preferred prime minister. Yuk!

It is up to Brits as to whether they want to keep their monarchy and class system. That does not require me though to gush over the birth of a British royal.

Gushing isn’t required. Neither is trashing of, as I said, one of the last historical remnants of Western civ.

And really, what it boils down to is the birth of an innocent baby. Too bad that some hearts are so hard they can’t spare a word of good wishes for the child.

In Britain, the monarchy long cultivated financial ties with the Arab petrostates and therefore supported mass Muslim immigration to Britain. Similarly, in order to keep on good terms with African business interests, the monarchy supported mass Black immigration to Britain.

The ominous demographic and cultural trends have led to much anxiety among native British whites. On a recent visit home, a family friend who is a British emigre was asked details of how she had gotten a green card. "Green card! I am a citizen," she replied proudly.

There may be advantages to keeping a limited constitutional monarchy where it has deep historical roots, but I think that Britain would do best these days to make her monarchy a mostly ceremonial one, as is the case elsewhere in Europe. It seems to me that the sins and crimes of other contemporary monarchs do nothing to detract from my side of this argument.

For what it is worth, my mother's parents were born in Ireland when it was a part of Britain, and I had a great uncle who died on the Somme in 1916 as a volunteer in the British army. This too seems to me to be of no consequence except as a matter of genealogy. For good or ill, I am utterly and completely American.

I am not interested in arguing for the house of Windsor. I am arguing for monarchy in general. The best king Britain ever had was Charles ii, who resisted the encroachments of a Whig parliament with designs upon the rights of the poor. That has always been the job of kings, and Charles Stuart ii, smeared as absolute monarch (by a Whig plutocracy dying to do exactly that) did a magnificent job and in many quiet ways rescued the British constitution and the rights of the lowborn.

Furthermore the concept of social immobility in which there’s no possibilityof advancement for the lowborn, is at odds with history. People didn’t come to America for freedom as a concept; most came to get rich quick in a land with no rules, or else to skip out on their debts.

vander sez:
“I dont have any problem, principally because the alternative is a system whereby the head of state is also a political figure.

IOW How do you manage to have respect for the office of the President, when the president is Barack Obama?”

Point 1 - ‘dah roy-aals’ ARE a political figure, or else why do the Brits still use the term, “in the Name of the Crown”?

Point 2 - as was taught to me many moons ago, by my ‘Training Instructor’, who was a part of the military honor guard over JFK’s body:
‘You salute the uniform, not the assshole wearing it!’ And so it is to the Queer-In-Charge, the same way.

Well, quite. The British Monarchy is a powerful symbol of stability and tradition in a world that seems to sneer at both.

It enjoys huge popularity in the UK, so it exists with the will and support of the people. I am hoping that the new princess will be named Charlotte. George IV’ s daughter, Princess Charlotte of Wales, was much beloved and her early death was mourned just as passionately in Georgian Britain as Princess Diana’s was in 1997.

dear spanish word ajeer sumptin’,

Is Hilary Clinton in jail yet?
Point 1 ... that is a very good question! Now, as to which charge(s) would you pin to her, i.e., from the days that led to her expulsion from the Nixon/Watergate team, from the days as the governor’s wife, from the ‘90’s, and things in-between, or things since?

In Britain even the Head of State is not above the law.
Point 2 ... What about the murder of Princess Diane?

But in America, the (previous) Head of the State department is untouchable and her husband is an unconvicted rapist.

Point 3 - IF you remember, when she left her post as SoS, did she sign a disclosure affidavit? If not, that is broken federal law. To refresh, you sign a document limiting you to no less than 25 years, in which you can say nothing that is of a national sensitive matter, even to the size battery a radio takes. I still have 3 ‘in effect’, that will outlast me.

And they’re just the slimiest leaves in a corrupt forest.
Point 4 - IF she is found to commit ‘high acts and treason’, yes, yet, for the moment ol’ BHO is still first on the list.

Please, regale the thread some more with your notions of equality.

I talk of Freedom, not the French notion and triumverate motto that led the way for the French Revolution.

I talk of what you, the individual, can do, or not do and remain on the couch, not the mob.

If your notion of “equality”, is anything OTHER than, bleeding the same color blood, then I suggest you go back and read Orwell’s Animal Farm, again, because you missed it.

dear romulus,
(who then is remus?)

“Apart from the fact that monarchy’s at least as good a guarantor of the liberties of ordinary people, there’s the fact that I am a Christian.”

There is political freedom, and spiritual freedom.

Spiritual freedom is something that is a choice, and personal.

Political freedom is a right, and thereby, ‘swearing an oath to a political leader’, is an abdication of that right, whether with full knowledge, or with idiocy, as those who thought it was cool to swear allegiance to BHO, or, under duress of loss of life or limb.

Since you live outside of the British realm your opinion is pointless . Do you complain about other existing monarchies?

Monarchy today is not a dynamic system but is a relic of the network of feudal obligations that developed in Europe after the collapse of the Roman empire. That system provided security and assured continuity of land tenure, with monarchs representing a common identity based on territory, language, religion, and nationhood. In economic terms, the system aggregated agricultural surpluses and diverted them into armies, castles, and conspicuous consumption by the nobility.

The modern world though created new and far greater sources of wealth and national power based on mass education, science, commerce, and industry. World War I then discredited Europe's governments, exposing them as ready to butcher their populations by the millions rather than accept a loss of national stature. With the exception of Britain, Europe's monarchies -- most of them run by dolts -- did not survive the conflict and its aftermath.
