Geoscientists now overwhelmingly agree that a single large asteroid or comet impact, such as Chicxulub in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, could not have been the sole cause of the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. Instead, new research in both planetary/space science and multiple earth-science specialties reveals that concomitant volcanic activity and the associated climate and environmental changes were significant contributing factors in four of the five major mass extinctions in Earth history.

This is a teaser for a GSA Annual Meeting & Exposition in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on 1922 October. There is an excellent listing of web pages and technical papers at the source.

“Chicxulub” sounds like a group of Vietnamese prostitutes.

Another example (as if any were needed) of why scientific pronouncements should never be taken too seriously.

As a President of present existence might put it, “If you made a crateryou didn’t extinct that. Somebody else made that happen.”

That’s the ticket. I’m sure that any connection between the collision of a 10-km, mountain-sized rock with the Earth at speeds exceeding 20 km per second and a global catastrophe leading to the extinction of more than 90 percent of all fossil families is purely coincidental.

But you see, by linking it to “climate catastrophes” you get millions in grant money and national publicity .. because! .. the administration paying for your research money NEEDS more climate change disaster stories for their carbon taxes and Paris treaty next year!

I’ve always wondered about the impact of a meteor on volcanism. There are a lot of little plate sections in the Caribbean.

I bet that sucker made magma sacs go wild in some spots..That was my thought. The shock wave would have transmitted thru the Earth back and forth several times. Probably woke a bunch of volcanoes.

Chicxulub caused a climate catastrophe by itself. There has been some questioning as to the extent and duration of the event and its atmospheric dimensions. These studies say that it was worse than a meteor though that was bad.

Another Holiday Express Inn graduate, huh?
I always marveled at science and how our planet was formed so to speak,, or rather, hodge podged together.
Tectonics ands such have always caught my interest as well.
Maybe the early Hawaiian islands got a little kick start along the way.

Heh... Thanks RACPE. This "just a coincidence" idea is ridiculous on its face, and was thoroughly shredded 20 years ago in the book on the controversy. The debate is over. ;')

Wait.. So they're contradicting themselves here. If climate change on an extinction level was cause by volcanoes, and volcanoes like Iceland, Mt. St. Helens, Krakatoa, etc. all spew more CO2 each than humans have in our entire history, then how are human CO2 emissions causing climate change?

Wow, talk about ironic, me and my buddies were discussing this very subject last Monday night at the bar while watching Monday night football..........Whoa, pretty eerie......
