"For everyone who knows something of the story of the space telescope and its travails, this book provides a fascinating look behind the scenes. An excellent contribution to the history of technology." --Robert P. Kirshner, author of The Extravagant Universe

Comes out ahead of the JWST launch.....that one will be infix able if anything is off
Large optics are not always easy to pull off
Yes—Glad you brought up the James Webb Space Telescope!
NASA is claiming in their PR that it will “replace” Hubble, but it’s an infra-red telescope and won’t produce optical pictures.
It’s over budget, over-due, and if for any reason it doesn’t work, it’s impossible to repair it in Space.
Highly suggest you take a look at “Genesis: The Story of Apollo 8,” by the same Author.

There is a nice podcast from The Moore Show, discussing the book, that I’ll post sometime later. (Or just search Moore Show + Apollo 8, at YouTube. Just be aware Google confuses this Robert Zimmerman, with Bob Dylan, George Zimmerman, and a revolting lefty hack with the same name.)
Here you go:

Indeed
Hugely over budget.....partially because the specifications kept changing. Its exoensive to hit a moving target. Partially because much of what was being done had not been done before so the learning curve was painful
And waaaaau behind schedule
Cant get to L2
The James Webb will produce optical pictures in false color; the wavelengths will be adjusted into the visual band. It will look as though they were taken in ordinary light. Most things that emit light emit infrared as well, so you won’t miss much. The advantage is that infrared is also able to penetrate dust clouds much better than ordinary visible.
The Hubble was an AMAZING human achievement, next up the Webb telescope.
Waiting for YEARS for that baby and PRAY that it opens up and operates correctly.
BILLIONS of dollars and man hours involved..
