It's Official: An Asteroid Wiped Out the Dinosaurs
Reuters ^ | 03/05/2010 | Kate Kelland

A giant asteroid smashing into Earth is the only plausible explanation for the extinction of the dinosaurs, a global scientific team said on Thursday, hoping to settle a row that has divided experts for decades.

This seems to be a plausible explanation.

PS That it was one impact or two impacts or five impacts does not refute the principal premise of the hypothesis, namely, that global catastrophes occur because of the impact of extra-terrestrial bodies. Previous theories offered up purely terrestrial explanations (volcanoes, climate change, SO2 levels, magnetic field reversals etc.)

I thought somebody had said they were killed off by Nuclear Weapons? lol.

I wouldn’t doubt that people believed that after seeing the FreeRepublic article claiming Ancient Greeks had nuclear bombs.

what experiments did they do to come up with this conclusion?

This is not science. It is conjecture and speculation. It is a theory. It is unproven nd cannot be duplicated in a lab. get a clue. It isn’t like what passes for science these days is a perfected science, is it?

First, the guys behind this theory were the most careful laboratory scientists science has ever produced.

Second, WTF does a clueless twit like you think "perfected science" means. There are lots of scientists on this forum just waiting to hear all about your little lecture on how you do science. We are all ears.

Anti-science is when someone says its “settled” and anyone who questions the “official” line is an idiot.

That is anti-science.

Brilliant. That is how you refute a theory. It was not one impact. It was two impacts. OK?!

Genius, I wrote in my first response on the thread that it was more likely a combination of factors that led to the dinos' demise. The woman behind that other piece I posted, btw, now believes other factors, including massive volcanic outpourings in India (Deccan Traps) may have been the real culprit, or at least large player.

“It’s the only plausible explanation” is NOT science”

Not to mention that many of the Dino’s continued to live for millions of years afterward.

“We are all ears.”

Which might possibly explain why you can’t see.

What experiments?

You could start here http://www.lbl.gov/Science-Articles/Archive/dinosaur-extinction.html. The real record of publication of experimental observations in peer reviewed journals is extremely extensive. It involves all sorts of things like spherules of shocked quartz, etc. Of course clueless twits like you have no idea what experimental science is or does.

Go back to hurling mudballs at a parade in the Castro district of San Francisco. It is all you understand.

See what? The ignorance that has been allowed to invade the intellectual core of conservatism when real conservatism was not watching? I see it as plain as day.

Some attitude you have for a scientist! How many conferences have you been kicked out of?

“Dinosaurs died off because the Enviros were not around to save them”

Wrong! The enviros en mass (in the near future) went back in time to do exactly that! Unfortunately for the Dinos, they were unable to completely digest the enviros; something in the enviros body's poisoned them and that's how the Dinos passed from history -— and how the enviros passed from ours.

“I still haven’t figured out how wooly mammoths were frozen with food in their mouths...”

Easy. The envios went back in time to solve global warming —— wooly mammoth tragedy was just an unfortuante side effect.

That is not a new hypothesis. It is an old hypothesis that folks won't give up on. The problem is that a bunch of palaeontologists resented it when a bunch of physicists and geophysicists came in an explained something that they could not. That happened 20 years ago. What is not science is the resentments and backbiting still redounding in the community.

The issue is not that the asteroid hypothesis does not need refinements and embellishments. It is that there is still a core group of resenters who STILL try to hold on to old beliefs.

Sound familiar?

Who the hell is arguing that huge asteroid impacts wouldn't cause a global catastrophe? Certainly not me.
