Israeli experts uncover Dead Sea Scrolls for first time in 60 years: The significance of the find, explained
Around 80 new fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in excavations in the Judean Desert, according to Israeli archaeologists.
About 132 and 136 A.D., they were most likely hidden during a Jewish revolt against Rome.
Israeli archaeologists reported the discovery of dozens of Dead Sea Scroll fragments bearing a biblical text in a desert cave, thought to have been hidden nearly 1,900 years ago during a Jewish revolt against Rome.
According to the Israel Antiquities Authority, the fragments of parchment discovered were Greek translations of the books of Zechariah and Nahum from the Book of the Twelve Minor Prophets, and have been dated to the first century based on the writing style.
They are the first new scrolls uncovered in 60 years in archaeological digs in the desert south of Jerusalem.
For me, one of the biggest parts of the whole thing was the credibility now given to 1 Enoch. It’s a must read. It is quoted in the NT.

The interesting thing about this discovery is that, even though it is in the same general area of the Judean desert, it is apparently not directly related to the original Dead Sea scrolls found in 1947. Those were thought to be associated with the Essene sect at Qumran which was was destroyed by the Romans when the Jewish temple was destroyed in AD 70. The BK Revolt was about a half century later. To me, this opens up possibilities that other, different, groups around that time we’re using these caves. Who knows what else might be found.

I firmly agree with you. I don’t see it as canon. But if a pastor keeps using “Back to the future” scenes to make points, it is worth it for me to watch the movie so I can apply context to what he’s talking about.
To clarify, it’s important to note that Timothy was told that all scripture (things written down) was useful. That is, there are no volumes the apostles nor any other writer of canon forbid us to read.
The context of Paul’s reference to “scripture” (3:16) in his 2nd letter to Timothy is v. 15, which refers to Holy Scripture and not other secular writings from which an excerpt might be taken.
Well, I generally agree. But at that time it would have meant the Septuagint, which contains quite a few books we consider not to be canon.

On a related note, you know where Paul talks about the length of a man’s and a woman’s hair and “nature”? It never really made sense to me no matter how you slice it, until I applied cultural and contemporaneous context.

Note, there are a lot of sites that discuss this. Just google “hippocrates hair as sex organ” without quotes and you’ll see what I mean.
There is a lot more going on in our bibles than we fully understand.
