I would like to have George Washington come back from the dead for one day. Id stand there and look at George, wearing those tight socks and that funny white wig, and Id ask him the question:
George, what do you think about Donald Trump?
Im not sure George would know how to respond. I certainly dont.
The Donalds phenomenon has been the big political story of the summer, interrupted only for short periods of time when someone else loses some more emails or resigns from Congress or visits from the Vatican. All those other things are interesting, to be sure, but the TV shows and magazines and newspapers and blogs all seem to go running back to Trump as soon as they can.
Ive been thinking about this, which in itself is kind of odd because the presidential election is still more than a year away and usually things that happen this far in advance really dont mean much. Yet, there already have been two Republican debates that attracted record audiences. How can that be?
Well, people arent tuning in to listen to Jeb Bush or Ted Cruz. Theyre watching because Donald Trump is in those debates. Its the same as watching NASCAR: everyone says they dont want to see crashes, but the real reason they watch is so they dont miss the Big One. Trump is like that: he might explode or maybe blow someone else up, and youd just hate to miss it.
Donald Trump is the guy you hope doesnt crash your party but you love it when he shows up at someone elses party. Never a dull moment. Americans love to watch drama and conflict, we just dont like to be part of it. So Trump is the perfect early presidential candidate because he keeps our attention and keeps things stirred up.
Plus, Donald Trump talks like an angry guy. A lot of people in this country are angry, too, about all kinds of things. In fact, it seems like just about everyone is mad about something these days, so people identify with Trump. You tell em Donald! It doesnt always even matter who were angry with, its just nice to hear someone with a microphone go off about something.
Its probably telling that his two closest rivals right now are other non-politicians. Carly Fiorina became famous when she was the boss at Hewlett-Packard where the board forced her out because things werent going so well. She also has a great name. I think it would almost be worth it for her to be president just so we could witness a meeting between Carly Fiorina and Angela Merkel of Germany.
Then theres Ben Carson, the Washington brain surgeon. Maybe he could do some work on members of Congress, kind of like a Dr. Carsonstein. That would keep us interested for a while.
If nothing else, the success of the non-politicians should send a message to Washington that people really are getting tired of the same, old inside the beltway method of doing things.
But back to The Donald. Im not certain he has staying power. Its one thing to lob grenades all around the landscape, its another to be able to clean up the mess. Im not even sure he thinks he has political staying power, but it really doesnt matter. With all this publicity and attention he is now the undisputed king of reality TV. For as long as it lasts, it will be a great ride.
Of course, if it lasts too long we could actually end up with a Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton presidential election. That is almost beyond imagination. But you know what? It would get great ratings. And somehow I have this uncomfortable feeling that Americans are so addicted to being entertained that it just could happen.
A year from now it probably will all be different. If you remember last time around, Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum all led in the polls at one time or another. And back in October of 2008, Barack Obama was running a distant second to Hillary. So it is all likely to change.
Still, Id like to know what George Washington might think. Would he see this election as the inevitable outcome of mass democracy and the power of television and the Internet? Would he be appalled by modern tactics or merely see them as an extension of what has always happened in American politics? Would he look at The Donalds hairdo and smile, thinking his white wig doesnt look so bad after all?
I guess well never know. But I would guess, like the rest of us, he would just have to watch to see how the story ends.
George Washington would want his name taken off The District of Corruption
The wonderful thing about asking what some historical figure would say about something is that you then get to try to vest your own personal opinion with that figure’s authority.
I’d love to have Trump come to one of my parties. I’d probably have to make extra BBQ, though. I imagine a lot of folks would drop by.
You’re not kidding. There’s a joke floating around the ‘net somewhere as to what happens when he meets up with 72 Virginians who beat the crapola out of him ... hehe
How would George feel about Obola?
Who writes this crap?
There are two aspects to consider (theory and practice):
1. Trump’s stated policy positions.
2. Whether he would do what he says, if elected.
You judge Part 1 on whether you agree with what’s he saying. IMO he’s saying the right things on immigration, 2nd Amendment, and foreign policy.
You judge Part 2 on things like the testimony of people like Jack Welsh who have done business with him.
I’m certain that, on seeing America and what we’ve exported around the world, Washington would swim to England and apologize to George III.
Washington would be appalled by the arrogant godlessness of the current administration
As well as the country as a whole.
The question this raised for me is what would Trump have done in 1776? Would he have been a signer? Would anyone in DC be a signer?
{”he would know exactly to apologize to, hed apologize to God.}
He warned about what would happen if we turned away from God, and here we are.
I’d be more interested in what George thinks of Obama.
I think he wouldn’t be too impressed, although he’d probably recognize him as one of the bombastic types rather than quiet, intellectual as others.
Personally I think Carson is more the Washington type. (And no, he was not a “Washington” surgeon, but a Baltimore surgeon, thank you very much.) And I think that is part of his appeal, unbeknownst to many voters.
Am I the only one who doesn’t get what people see in Ben Carson?
Donald Trump is one of the very few people involved in national politics that actually understands the Bill of Rights, and by extension, the Natural Rights of Man.
The Second Amendment guarantees a fundamental right that belongs to all law-abiding Americans, Trump continued to read.
The Constitution doesnt create that right; it ensures that the government cant take it away, he added to further cheers from the crowd.
Trump speaks like a FReeper.
The author could just read George Washington’s “Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour.” Then I think he wouldn’t need to ask the question.
I would guess that much of Carson's numbers is a media creation, like those of FioRINO. I like Carson, don't get me wrong. I also like the way he pulled a Trump and stood up to the concern trolls over the Muslim issue.
He doesn't have what it takes to beat the Uniparty slime like rented mules. Trump does.
You’re not skeered of The Dread Pirate Trump, are ya, Deef? LOL! :)
I just don’t get how he’s more qualified for that job than you, me or any random citizen. I have much more foreign policy, executive, government and political experience than he does. So does the average GS-18, O-5 and above or mayor.
