Military veterans in North Carolina solidly back President Bush's bid for re-election, according to a survey conducted this week for The News & Observer. Fifty-seven percent of Tar Heel vets said this week that they would vote for Bush, the Republican, while 35 percent prefer Democratic challenger John Kerry. And after weeks of public focus on Kerry's war record, 40 percent of North Carolina's veterans don't think he is being honest about his Navy service in Vietnam, while 35 percent believe him. The responses varied sharply by party affiliation: 71 percent of the Democratic veterans said they believed Kerry, while...

Campaign '04: The media finally have discovered Swift boat veterans. Not to tell their story, mind you. But to attack them for daring to criticize John Kerry. That's why "Unfit for Command" is such an important book. To listen to the mainstream media, you'd think nothing of note came from "Unfit for Command," the book written by former Navy commander John O'Neill that sums up the case made by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. In fact, it's full of damning detail about Kerry's career in Vietnam and his anti-war activity afterward. The overall picture that emerges isn't one that should...

Twice in 33 years, John O'Neill looked up from a hospital bed and saw John Kerry on television. Both times, he was stirred to action. In 1971, while recovering from leg surgery, O'Neill watched his fellow Vietnam veteran tell a Senate committee that U.S. soldiers had admitted committing war crimes there. Infuriated, O'Neill debated Kerry on national television. He accused him of libel and of spreading "the big lie." This year, in intensive care after donating a kidney to his wife, O'Neill watched on television as John Kerry emerged as the leading Democratic presidential candidate. This time, O'Neill wrote a...

Retired Gen. Tommy Franks' command of The New York Times best-seller list will be brief, because of the intense interest in what some other veterans have to say. After two weeks at No. 1, Franks' "American Soldier" will drop to no. 2 on the list to be published Sept. 5, when "Unfit for Command," the account of the Swift boat vets against John Kerry, takes the top slot. The book's rise is remarkable since the Sept. 5 list is based on sales last week, when copies were unavailable in many stores.Demand had depleted Regnery Publishing's initial printing of 85,000 copies. It'll have...

Fairfax, Va.: If you have all these issues with John Kerry, why wait 35 years to bring them public after he has served in the US Senate all these years? It seems that much of what we are hearing is literal gotcha that can easily be turned on anyone including yourself. John E. O'Neill: First, when John Kerry made war crimes claims I debated him in June of 1971 after which he generally faded from public view. On many occasions his political opponents, democratic and Republican, contacted me and many other swifties for information to defeat him in political races....

I was just called by Barnes & Nobles to tell my copy of Unfit for Command was in and would only be held for 3 days due to such high demand. I will be going to pick it up after work. But, I ordered 3 so I could give the others away. I had ordered from B&N last week, yet, orderd from Amazon.com 3 weeks ago (and still have not received). The amazing part of this little story is I am in the middle fo reading THE FAITH OF GEORGE W. BUSH by Stephen Mansfield. I find myself laughing out...

Bush Sends Troops to Stop Sales of Swift Boat Book (2004-08-25) -- President George Bush today mobilized Army National Guard units nationwide to confiscate copies of Unfit for Command, the controversial anti-Kerry book by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. The move comes in response to demands by former Sen. Max Cleland and former Army Green Beret Jim Rassman, whose life was saved by John Forbes Kerry during the Vietnam War. Mr. Kerry is a well-known presidential candidate, Vietnam veteran and also a U.S. Senator. "As commander in chief, my first duty is to protect our homeland," said Mr. Bush in...

Ryan Lizza has a semi-definitive piece on the Kerry campaign's communications strategy to handle the Swifties, writing that the campaign believed the rules of the road changed on them midstream. If it weren't for cable and conservative echo chamber, the campaign could well have ignored the charges and went forth on that assumption initially. Lizza still finds much to be desired in how the campaign responded. "The Swift Boat controversy has been bubbling for months, and inside the campaign, some aides, such as John Hurley, Kerry's veterans' coordinator, and John Martilla, a senior adviser, had been making the case that...

The timeline in "Unfit for Command" for John Kerry's deployment on the USS Gridley doesn't match the ship's operations as listed in Kerry's Fitness Reports. "Unfit for Command"'s timeline indicates that Gridley departed Vietnam January 2, 1968 and, travelling via Australia, returned to Long Beach on June 8. Missing from this account is an additional period of Gulf of Tonkin SAR duty in the time period April 1 - May 5, 1968. This information appears in Kerry's Fitness Report for the period of March 23 - July 20, 1968. Regarding kerry's MLK assassination story, I believe that it's possible for...

We formed Swift Boat Veterans For Truth for one purpose: to present to the American public our conclusion that John Kerry is not fit to be commander in chief. Why have we come forward? As explained in "Unfit For Command," Mr. Kerry grossly exaggerated and lied about his abbreviated four-month tour in Vietnam. He disgraced all legitimate Vietnam War heroes when he falsely testified to Congress that we were war criminals, daily engaged in atrocities that had the full approval of all levels in the chain of command. So, once Mr. Kerry decided to apply for the commander in chief's...

Chapter 6 "A TESTIMONY OF LIES" Pages 99 - 122 Introduction: “Lt. Kerry returned home from the war to make some outrageous statements and allegations. Numerous criminal acts in violations of the law of war were cited by Kerry, disparaging those who had fought with honor in that conflict.” --LT. COL. JAMES ZUMWALT, USMC (RETIRED)

Until recently, I regarded the Swift Boat Veterans book and ad campaign with indifference generally reserved for Justin Timberflake's latest album. Kerry's constant touting of his Vietnam medals and the Swift Boat Veterans campaign seemed to be a he-said/they-said deal, and since I wasn't there, I have no way to know who was telling the truth. Furthermore, whether Kerry was a war hero or not made no difference to me regarding his views on future policy, such as his vigorous defense of abortions and his openness to same-sex marriages. This type of let's-stick-to-the-issues sentiment was expressed by Sen. John McCain...

(Sample question, one of many) Bethlehem, Pa.: Mr. O'Neill, you are questioning the validity of medals awarded to John Kerry by the U.S. government. Aren't you also by implication questioning the competency of the medal eligibility determinations made by U.S. military brass? If so, aren't you in reality calling into question the authenticity of every medal awarded to every U.S. serviceman? If so, how do we differentitate the "good" medals from the "bad" medals? John E. O'Neill: A portion of the book deals with the incidents in which John Kerry obtained medals. With respect to John Kerry’s first Purple Heart...

Vietnam-era POWs are lining up to join the Swift Boat Veterans in attacking John Kerry’s readiness to lead the country. The POWs are breaking their silence on how John Kerry’s controversial anti-war activities -- particularly his testimony in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee -- were used to torment them while in captivity. The extent and fallout of Kerry’s anti-war activities are outlined in Unfit for Command, the fast-selling new book by John O’Neill and Jerry Corsi. (Human Events Online reported yesterday the book will vault onto the top of the New York Times Bestseller’s list on 9/5/04.) A...

Although members of the mainstream media continue to support whatever John Kerry and his surrogates tell them (while they continues to comfortably indulge themselves in their never ending Bush-bashing), the extent of Kerry’s lies and lack of any conviction continues to assault those of us in the alternative media. Suffice it to say, Mr. Kerry has taken both anti-war and pro-war positions. Lately, however (with the exception of telling us that President Bush is doing everything wrong in Iraq, he seldom addresses his own stance. Kerry advises us that he and his band of barristers will “prove” collaboration between the...

A new politically tinged book is apparently not "unfit" for consumption in Livingston County. "Unfit for Command" - which questions the accuracy of Sen. John Kerry's military service in Vietnam as its been portrayed by the Democratic presidential nominee from Massachusetts - has been a big seller in Livingston County bookstores. "We ran out," Todd Gyulveszi, owner of the Little Professor Book Center of Brighton, said Tuesday. "We're getting 20 more coming in tomorrow. It's a biggie." A biggie especially when compared with President Bill Clinton's memoir, "My Life," which has sold a scant seven copies at Little Professor since...
