The Danish government is said to have agreed on legislation to suspend asylum rules for Ukrainian refugees while also asking many Syrians to return to their country. Denmark is expected to pass the new legislation for Ukrainian refugees on Wednesday after the government and the National Association of Municipalities reached an agreement on the matter. Under the agreement, Ukrainians entering Denmark will be granted a residence permit within four days of their arrival and will be assigned a municipality where they will be settled, broadcaster TV Syd reports. Denmark’s Minister for Immigration and Integration Mattias Tesfaye commented on the policy...

In February 2017, the Washington Post’s Miller had the lead byline on a story based on leaks of Trump’s conversations with Australia’s prime minister and Mexico’s president. Six months later, the Post published the entire transcripts of both conversations in another Miller story. It was through such national security correspondents that anti-Trump sources -- intelligence officials -- pushed leaks of classified information and other tidbits intended to damage Trump into the media. There it merged with other anti-Trump currents in nearly every corner of the press, where it blossomed into Russiagate. After a nearly two-year investigation, the special counsel found...

[Catholic / Orthodox Caucus] Backstage. Francis’s Missing “Gift” To the Ukrainians The July 4 visit to the Vatican by Vladimir Putin, who is certainly not a friendly face for Ukrainians, cast a shadow over the meeting in Rome, over the next two days, of the synod of the Greek Catholic Church of Ukraine, with its major archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk (see photo). On July 5 Pope Francis delivered a speech to them that was very evasive on the tough questions, that is on both the ongoing military conflict and the dispute among the Churches of the Orthodox camp, both with Russia...

Holocaust survivors' lawsuit against Vatican proceeds Matt C. Abbott June 14, 2005 From a news release dated June 14, 2005: Vatican dealt another legal setback in Holocaust claims lawsuit The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco has denied a Vatican petition for reconsideration and has shown no interest in a Vatican request for an extraordinary en banc hearing of the Ninth Circuit. This follows the Ninth Circuit's April 18, 2005 ruling that Holocaust survivors will be permitted to continue their claims against the Vatican for an accounting and restitution of the so-called Ustasha, or Croatian treasury, consisting of...

An Italian-led, joint European police operation, 'Sunflower', led to the arrests of 80 people in early October 2002, in what was claimed to be the continent's most important operation ever against human trafficking. Members of gangs trafficking east European women were arrested in Italy, Austria, Spain, Portugal, France, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Targets of the operation included travel agents, coach companies and 'hotel' owners. The operation followed a similar one in April 2001, in which 100 people were arrested; police pointed to close co-operation between Russian and Italian groups in both cases. However, the operation has only made a...
