The trade gap in goods fell to $66.5 billion in October from a revised $70.5 billion in the prior month, according to advanced figures released by the government... The advanced report also revealed an 0.2% increase in wholesale inventories in October and a 0.3% gain in retail inventories. All three advanced figures suggest gross domestic product could be higher in the fourth quarter than Wall Street has been forecasting... What happened: Imports of foreign-made goods declined by $5 billion to $201.8 billion in October, likely reflecting a recent pattern of up-and-down figures depending on the timing of new U.S. tariffs...

The United States trade deficit dropped in May to the lowest level in 19 months as exports rose to a record level. The Department of Commerce announced the May trade deficit โ€” the difference between what America sells and what it buys in foreign markets โ€” decreased 6.6 percent to $43.1 billion โ€” the smallest imbalance since October 2016. Exports climbed 1.9 percent to a record $215.3 billion. Imports were up a smaller 0.4 percent to $258.4 billion. The Trump administration followed through with imposing tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese products on Friday. China retaliated in kind, starting what...
  • Chinese Exports Collapse Leading To 2nd Largest Trade Deficit On Record

Plenty of excuses out there for this evening's collosal miss in Chinese exports (-18.1% YoY vs an expectation of a 7.5% rise) mainly based on timing issues over the Lunar New Year (but didn't the 45 economists who forecast this data know the dates before they forecast?) This is a 6-sigma miss and plunges China's trade balance to its biggest miss on record and 2nd largest deficit on record. Combining Jan and Feb data (i.e. smoothing over the holiday), exports are still down 1.6% YoY - not good for the much-heralded global recovery. Exports to the rest of the BRICs...

GLOBALIZATION is imperfectly understood by many American policy makers, with dangerous consequences for the United States economy, says Clyde Prestowitz, author of "Three Billion New Capitalists: The Great Shift of Wealth and Power to the East" (Basic Books, 2005, $26). A former trade negotiator in the Reagan administration, he is president of the Economic Strategy Institute in Washington. Here are excerpts from a conversation:Q. Why do you say that many American policy makers don't understand globalization?A. There are two different concepts of globalization. One concept is based on the American experience, which is one of a democratic country under a...
