It’s a pollen-pocalypse. Stunning aerial photos show a haze of pollen so thick over Durham, North Carolina, it turned the sky yellow this week — as doctors in the region have reported an uptick in patients complaining about their allergy symptoms. “In April in North Carolina we have an overlap for a couple weeks where we have pretty high counts of tree and then grass also gets started,” Heather Gutekunst, a doctor with Allergy Partners of Raleigh, told ABC 11. “So when we see that, if you are allergic to both, we tend to see an escalation in symptoms.”

SEATTLE -- Strong wind gusts, approaching 60 mph in some areas, toppled trees and took down power lines on Sunday morning. In Seattle, more than 50,000 customers were in the dark by 2:30 a.m. according to Seattle City Light. By afternoon, crews were still working to restore power for roughly 6,000 City Light customers. Outages ballooned in cities to the south of Seattle, and on the Eastside, where Puget Sound Energy's outage map showed a combined total of nearly 220,000 customers affected early on.

The tropical depression, locally named Usman, brought heavy rains on Saturday, causing catastrophic flooding and triggering deadly landslides, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management agency said Monday. GENEVA — An unexpected snowstorm coupled with high winds killed four climbers in the Swiss Alps and left five others in critical condition early Monday after they became trapped overnight and couldn’t reach shelter, officials said. A total of 14 hikers from France, Germany and Italy were left stranded in the Pigne d’Arolla region, police in southwestern Valais canton said. Authorities deployed seven helicopters as part of rescue efforts. The climbers were caught off-guard by high winds, snow and bitter cold, and were forced to spend the night outdoors, Valais police spokesman Markus Rieder said.
