The July 2010 Dice Report shows that software development skills in general and C# skills in particular are more in demand this year, making Dice's top 10 list of in-demand skills. In addition, Dice reports that there are more open full-time IT positions this year than last year at this time. But the numbers are still a far cry from the number of open positions in July 2008. Just wondering about Microsoft Security Essentials. How does it compare to Norton, AVG etc? Often when its free you tend to get your money's worth. Is that the case here? Should I use it in conjunction with other anti-virus software?

My Firewall/Antivirus detected an infection of the "Packed.Win32.Krap.hm!A2" and http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx?md5=45e98426fafd221ffb7d55ce8a1ae531 says it's: A malicious trojan horse or bot that may represent security risk for the compromised system and/or its network environment. I tried to block it and delete the infected files, but that just set off an attack against my computer, which caused me to reload from backup several times. How do I get rid of this nightmare, and prevent it from coming back?

After getting frustrated out of the lemons his problems gave him, David Miller made his own corporate lemonade. Due to the frustration of always having to call technical support to solve his own frequent hardware problems, he started taking the initiative to educate himself.

When it comes to computer technology, thin is always in. It's indisputable that the thinner, lighter, clearer, the better when dealing with the latest computer gadget. This keyboard is the epitome of the high standards expected of the technological version of the fashion industry. It's based on image as well, that is, image recognition technology. It judges clicking depending on the image of the size and where your finger touches the keyboard.

It seems that every time Ubuntu gets an update there's talk about how the new version will finally usher in the era of user-friendly Linux and turn the open-source operating system (OS) into a serious competitor to OS X and Windows. We've been running the latest version, 10.04 (code-named Lucid Lynx), since it first hit beta in mid-March. While we have a hard time seeing it replace Windows 7 anytime soon, the regular six-month intervals of serious improvements are finally paying off in an arguably consumer-ready OS. A Completely New Look *********************snip***************************** image at website***************************************************** The other major new feature...

Obama amputates our nuclear arms By: Charles Krauthammer ...snippet...Under President Obama’s new policy, however, if the state that has just attacked us with biological or chemical weapons is “in compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty,” explained Gates, then “the U.S. pledges not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against it.” Imagine the scenario: Hundreds of thousands are lying dead in the streets of Boston after a massive anthrax or nerve gas attack. The president immediately calls in the lawyers to determine whether the attacking state is in compliance with the NPT. If it turns out that the attacker...

Friday's normally are pretty quite in the tech industry. However, for some reason, today has been particularly interesting -- especially on the Adobe front. Earlier today, we posted a story which pointed out Adobe's fear of HTML5 gaining traction. In fact, one of the only reasons why HTML5 has even beginning a lot of attention these days is for two reasons; 1) Apple's iPhone OS-based devices don't support flash and 2) Apple is out to kill Flash. > Brimelow continues throughout the blog railing against Apple and its behavior with regards to Apple. However, he saves his most colorful language...

The U.S. Army is getting very tight with the Apple Corporation, mainly because soldiers have long been enthusiastic users of Apple products (iPod and iPhone, and probably iPad as well). But Apple has tight control over what software can be used on these devices, so the military needs a close relationship with Apple just to get their custom military software on the iPods, iPhones and iPads the troops are so enthusiastic about. This relationship enabled the army to recently run a programming contest for troops and civilian employees. The goal was to create the most effective smart phone software for...

This Saturday, the symbols of our civilization, iconic buildings and landmarks from all over the world, will stand in darkness, to help bring to light one of the biggest challenges of our generation-- Climate Change. The 'Earth Hour' that began as a show of solidarity against climate change has today become a global movement. On March 27 at 8.30pm, switch off your lights to support action against climate change. Call for a climate deal that keeps global warming below two degrees and pledge to reduce your own carbon footprint. You can urge your employer, employees, club and your community to...

While the Toyota portion of the article is informative, the really interesting is the authors remarks on: As anyone with experience in embedded systems will tell you, there are nasty software bugs that can be extremely difficult to reproduce in a laboratory test environment. To illustrate, I'd like to describe one such bug we encountered at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory while developing the flight software for NASA's Mars Pathfinder spacecraft.... much more experience is detailed in the article here which is quite interesting and well worth reading.

Hello fellow DBA and other small business owners, I'm seeking advice about accounting software for small business operations. I've used Quickbooks for decades and I'm looking for a new application since my business has upgraded to Win-7, which is WOW btw. QB has become a tiresome and time consuming ordeal since the old school support has become a memory of the past. What app do you use and how long? Does it fare well with small DBA’? And any other input would be gratefully appreciated.

In his suicide note, the computer software engineer who flew a small plane into a building with Internal Revenue Service offices in Texas on Thursday cited a 1986 tax law as a major motivation for his action. The law, known as Section 1706 of the 1986 Tax Reform Act, made it extremely difficult for information technology professionals to work as self-employed individuals, forcing most to become company employees.

Several times I have written about "Software Piracy", and I think a lot of my readers get a little tired of hearing about it, but something happened this week that started me thinking about Software Piracy again.Microsoft made Software Piracy Prevention a voluntary thing. Of course Microsoft will probably pitch a different explanation, but what they actually did was post an "update" to Windows 7 that had lots of anti-piracy software in it, and told their customers that it was "voluntary" to install the anti-piracy software. Now this was probably in response to another time when Microsoft tried to force...

Apple's Wozniak: Toyota may have software trouble Tue Feb 2, 10:22 pm ET WASHINGTON (AFP) – Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak suggested Tuesday in media interviews that Toyota's troubles with a defective accelerator pedal may have to do with software, after his Prius sped up while in cruise-control. "Since my foot never touches the pedal," Wozniak told ABC News, the problem "cannot be a sticky accelerator pedal.... There might be some bad software in there." He said the problem in his Prius might be related to the random acceleration issue that has forced Toyota into a massive recall of eight million...

US Government recommends weighing laptop before and after each visit. Senior executives in US IT companies have been advised by the US Government to follow extremely strict policies for visits to China which extend far beyond standard software protection. The policies encourage them to leave their standard IT equipment at home and to buy separate gear only for use in China. Mark Bregman, chief technology officer at security firm Symantec said he left his MacBook Pro behind in the US and took his MacBook Air whenever he flew to China. Bregman said he only ever used the Air in China...
