A man wielding a knife was fatally shot by police inside a residential building in San Francisco Friday, authorities said. Officers responded to the building in the South of Market neighborhood after receiving a call about a man armed with a knife, San Francisco Police Officer Robert Rueca said in a statement. The officers made contact with the man and an officer-involved shooting occurred, Rueca said without offering any other information on what led to the fatal shooting.

Germany remains the top destination for people seeking protection in Europe, with the number of asylum applications filed in the country already exceeding the 100,000 mark in 2021. Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) said that by the end of September it had received 100,278 initial applications from asylum-seekers. Ray Odierno, the retired Army general who led U.S. troops through the Iraq War and later served as the Army’s chief of staff, has died of cancer at the age of 67.
