(CNSNews.com) - The White House announced on Wednesday that judges have picked 54 children whose “healthy lunchtime” recipes have earned them a trip to Washington, D.C., to dine with First Lady Michelle Obama next month. Beef and pork producers may not be pleased to learn that of all the recipes chosen from every U.S. state and territory, only a handful have meat as an ingredient if their title is any indication – Chi-Irish Sheppard’s Pie, Mexican Haystack and Mediterranean Kabob. Instead, vegetables, fish and poultry dominate the list. Winning recipes include “Veggie Spaghetti,” “Over the Rainbow Veggie Pancakes,” “Mo-Rockin' Meatless...

When it comes to comfort food, it’s hard to beat macaroni and cheese, a longtime staple of Southern kitchens with recipes as varied as the cooks who make them. But even in this crowded field, Carrie Morey’s version stands out. Cooked in a cast iron skillet with vermicelli instead of macaroni, Caroline’s Macaroni Pie combines the lightness of a soufflé with the ease of a casserole–which is just the way Morey, founder of Callie’s Charleston Biscuits, likes it. “It’s the first thing I mastered cooking at age nine, and it’s the only macaroni and cheese I’ve ever known,” she says....

If bourbon is the social lubricant of the South, then mayonnaise is the culinary ball bearings. It makes your deviled eggs, chicken salads, potato salads, pimiento cheese, and tomato sandwiches sing. So why master homemade mayonnaise? For starters, it’s healthier and tastes better than store-bought (yes, even Duke’s). Plus, making mayo will make your grandmother’s heart full.

'Cannibal sandwiches' sicken Wisconsin residents MILWAUKEE — "Cannibal sandwiches," an appetizer featuring raw, lean ground beef served on cocktail bread, may be a Wisconsin tradition, but they are not safe, health officials said, noting that more than a dozen people became ill after consuming them last holiday season. Health officials confirmed four cases tied to E. coli bacteria and 13 likely cases in people who ate the sandwiches at several gatherings late last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said a report issued this week. The meat came from a Watertown market that later recalled more than 2,500...

It is the secret ingredient of many a homemade meal. But the precise contents of this tangy relish itself have remained a mystery. Until now. After more than 170 years, the original recipe for Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce has been revealed. It was found in notes dating from the mid-1800s that were dumped in a skip by the sauce factory. Brian Keogh, a former Lea and Perrins accountant, discovered the notes, which were neatly written in sepia ink in two leather-bound folios, and rescued them. Today, the label on bottles of the sauce lists vinegar, molasses, sugar, salt, anchovies,...

A university academic says she believes she has uncovered the first English recipes for iced chocolate desserts. Dr Kate Loveman, from the University of Leicester, said she found the recipes in manuscripts which belonged to the Earl of Sandwich in 1668. At the time, the chocolate treats came with a health warning for damaging the stomach, heart and lungs. The research also shows some of the regular themes in chocolate advertising across the centuries. Dr Loveman, a senior lecturer in 17th and 18th Century English literature, said she was looking through a Samuel Pepys journal when she came across a...

Algae suit generates food to feed your constant hunger When we think of futuristic fashion, our minds often lean toward the minimalist designs of Star Trek or Tron. But maybe what we wear in the future will have more to do with what we eat than what we want to look like. That's the premise behind the algaculture symbiosis suit designed by Michael Burton and Michiko Nitta. The symbiosis suit is designed to make food for you as you go about your daily routine. A number of tubes, placed in front of your mouth, harness the CO2 you breathe and...

The United Nations Says We Should All Be Eating Insects The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), a part of the United Nations, has released a report saying that we should all get ready to start eating insects. There’s a certain amount of truth in the report but not all that much: “ World population is slated to top nine billion by 2050, and seeing as how arable land is being rapidly swallowed by towns and cities, oceans are increasingly overfished, and climate change is disrupting traditional farming, a new United Nations study proposes a twist on Marie Antoinette’s dietary advice:...
