California is set to be the first state in the country to enact a law that will limit prosecutors’ ability to use rap lyrics as evidence in criminal cases. Assembly Bill 2799 will require a pre-trial hearing to determine if the lyrics are relevant to the case. Assembly member Reginald Jones-Sawyer Sr., says this bill will help protect rap artists, who are predominantly African American, and their freedom of speech. He also says he hopes the bill will help eliminate any racial bias that may exist when presenting evidence.

A Texas man who raps about robbing ATMs lived out his own lyrics when he was busted for stealing from a cash machine in Tennessee earlier this week. Ladesion Riley, 30, was one of four people charged for allegedly holding up an ATM technician at a Bank of America in Nashville as he serviced the machine on Monday, according to the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department. Hypo, real name Lamar Jackson, was attacked in front of a "large number of people" at the bash in Redbridge, east London, police said. Despite efforts to save him the 39-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. No arrests have been made. Scotland Yard is treating the case as a murder and has appealed for witnesses. Atlanta rapper Archie Eversole, best known for his stadium anthem "We Ready," was fatally shot, and his brother has been accused in the slaying, police said Thursday. Officers were called to a gas station March 25 and found the mortally wounded performer, DeKalb County police said. The victim, Arthur "Archie" Eversole was taken to a hospital before he died from his wounds April 3, police said. Eversole's brother, Alexander Kraus, has been charged with murder. He was arrested without incident less than a quarter-mile away the night of the shooting, officials said.

Six people were injured after a shooting broke out at a rap concert in Eugene, Oregon on Friday, police said. Multiple shots were fired at WOW Hall, where rappers Lil Bean, Zay Bang and other artists were slated to perform around 9:30 p.m., local time, the Eugene Police Department said.
