Who wants to participate in a music play-off bracket-type poll for best songs of the '70s? 2 and 5 years ago I ran "tournaments" to pick the best songs of the '70s and '80s, based on Billboard rankings, so only the best of the best were included! You can view how this played out here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/3249477/posts http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/3635562/posts I want to do that for the '60s, and some posters expressed interest in the '60s back then.

Children are more coddled and protected than ever in 2019. For kids, it's oppressive. I know mine listen to my stories of summers full of freedom and independence, running around the neighborhood all day until dark, with wide-eyed envy. These days, kids are hardly free to do anything we could back in generations past. 8. Play all day with no adult supervision, roaming neighborhoods and friends' houses until dark When I was about seven, I was allowed to run with my sisters and the neighborhood kids all summer until the street lights came on. We would dash out the door...
  • The TWA Hotel Turns an Abandoned Airport Terminal Into a Midcentury Dream

Meet JFK's first on-airport hotel—complete with midcentury modern guest rooms, a 10,000-square-foot rooftop deck with pool, and a Jean-Georges restaurant. An abandoned airport terminal at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport has been reborn as the TWA Hotel, a stylish stay channeling the jet age. While the once-groundbreaking Trans World Airlines ceased operations in 2001, and the terminal closed in October of that year, the luxe hotel pays homage to the original architecture of the 1962 building designed by architect Eero Saarinen.

BRYAN, Ohio -- When the New England Confectionery Co. filed for bankruptcy in Boston last spring, there was such an immediate and deep sense of loss across the country that folks took to local stores and Amazon to claim a piece of yet another what-used-to-be. Necco Wafers, its signature product, had been part of Americana since before the Civil War. In fact, the company said the sugary, chalky wafers were a favorite of soldiers because the confection didn't melt, and that they were consumed by Union soldiers on the battlefield during the Civil War and by GIs during World War...

In the modern day gun world the semi-auto pistols have a huge hold of the market for self-defense guns. But concealed carry revolvers can still hold their own for personal defense. Revolvers can be a strong choice for concealed carry, as they’re reliable and easy to use. Not everyone is a fan of a small semi-auto for concealed carry. However, there is a large fan base of shooters that will only look to revolvers for concealed carry. If you’re in this group and interested in carrying a revolver for CCW, read on of the pros and con and see our...

In September 2001, I bought the lot, covered in trees and so thick with brush you couldn’t walk through it. I cleared the land myself. We built the house in 2002, moving in on Labor Day. The columns on the front porch were my ex-wife’s excellent idea. My father died four days after we moved in and I never got to show it to him. My oldest daughter, age 11 when we moved here, entered adolescence and then womanhood in this home. I met her nervous first dates on that porch. When my youngest daughter was born, I carried...

OK, FREEPERS, LET'S START THIS CONTEST FOR THE GREATEST SONG OF THE '70S. The baseline for the contest is the top 7 hits of each year of the '70s, as compiled by BILLBOARD. This is not based on personal preferences, biases, prejudices, or counter-culture fringe-element reactivity. The rules in general will be to vote for everything shown. NO equivocating, ties, or omissions. Votes will ONLY be counted if the "ballot" is COMPLETE. *ROUND 1* We begin by taking the #7 songs of each year and paring them from 10 songs to 4 (to set up brackets of 64 for the...

With Black Friday nearly upon us, are any of you folks thinking “Oh, no — I’m still recovering from last Christmas and all the running around?” Believe it or not, through much of the last century, you generally didn’t have to travel downtown or to a mall to buy what you needed for holidays, or any other time of year for that matter. Most American towns had one or more little walkable neighborhood shopping districts, and they’re a forgotten piece of our history. Let’s take a look at daily and holiday shopping, mid-20th-century style. Here are my top 10 things...

Gun ads have changed with the times. Political correctness is certainly not the name of the game in these classic pieces of gun marketing. It was just plain old fashion advertising back in the day. Hammer the hammer? Lawyers wouldn’t come within a football field of this one. Of course, hammering on a vintage revolver probably is a bad idea anyway…Oh no, that guy is teaching his son how to hunt, you say? Where are their iphones, video games and couch? Well, buddy, this is how a father is supposed to raise his son to be a man, not a...

  • In the Trump era, Obama nostalgia is a booming industry (Barf Alert!)

Pat Cunnane spent six years in the White House helping to promote Barack Obama’s message. From the outside, he still does: On Tuesday, Cunnane became the latest Obama alumnus to land a contract for a book on his experiences. While much of the world obsesses about the more impetuous musings of President Trump — or perhaps in reaction to that obsession — a new market for Obama nostalgia is manifest in the growing number of books, podcasts and TV and film treatments by or involving young veterans from the Obama stable.
