NEW HAVEN — More disappointing news for the city. Fitch has downgraded the city’s credit rating on the heels of a similar downgrade Wednesday from S&P Global Retings as New Haven gets ready to sell bonds around Aug. 2. Fitch downgraded the rating from A- to BBB, with a negative outlook from stable. S&P gave the city a BBB+ rating with a negative outlook. The new bonds are $58,030,000 to finance city and school projects and $160 million in refunding bonds, which will be used for debt service savings and to cover an estimated $15 million fiscal year 2018 deficit....

The New Haven Police Department will be buying back guns Saturday and those guns will be transformed into gardening tools, with help from inmates, and provided to schools to harvest vegetables. Once people turn guns in for gift cards, officers will destroy those guns “under the tutelage of a local and renowned sculptor,” Gar Waterman, police said. Sheriff David Clark was scheduled to speak at New Haven University. He had been invited, and had accepted the invitation. After the University considered the political ramifications, the person who invited him, Patrick Malloy, came up with a face saving excuse to revoke the invitation. A University of New Haven lecturer behind canceling a campus appearance by Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke has come forward to apologize for misrepresenting the popular conservative sheriff. Washington — An alliance of Asian American groups on Friday filed a federal complaint against HarvardUniversity, saying that school and other Ivy League institutions are using racial quotas to admit students other than high-scoring Asians. A Yale University student who recently returned from Liberia has been admitted to Yale-New Haven Hospital to be evaluated for Ebola-like symptoms, according to officials from New Haven Mayor Toni Harp's office and Yale-New Haven Hospital. Hospital officials in New Haven have quarantined a patient with Ebola-like symptoms as a precaution. Officials tell Eyewitness News that the patient was admitted to Yale-New Haven Hospital. A New Haven convenience store owner shot and killed a man suspected of trying to rob his store and another store owned by his brother at gunpoint on the same night, police said.
