New Haven's mayor announced a new economic initiative involving city-specific debit cards.

Mayor Toni Harp said the new "New Haven - Shop, Dine, Park" program will issue gift cards that will work at participating stores, restaurants or parking locations.

Harp revealed the details about the program during a news conference Monday afternoon at the Shubert Theater on College Street.

"It supports our merchants, our restaurants. It gives people a way to get resources in our town," said Harp. "We'll be able to tell who is coming into our town, give people who have this card special offers."

She said the card itself costs $3.95 plus whatever amount the buyer adds to it.

Umm...so I'm going to pay four bucks for a card that can only be used in the city where I could be using a free card that works everywhere? The article mentions nothing about a discount at these merchants for using it. Why on earth would anyone wish to do that?

“It supports our merchants, our restaurants. It gives people a way to get resources in our town,”
So they have to give people money to shop or eat in the town?
I don’t get it.

Free Parking made America great.

No parking in "structures" for me.

Kinda like that whole aces and eights thing.

And just why would I buy a card that is only good in a single town. As a consumer, it doesn’t make any sense to buy the card but I doubt any government person would ever get it.

Well...they call them “gift cards.” So I guess the idea is to give all these headaches to your in-laws....or something ;-)

I will go to New Haven either for a burger at Lois Lunch ( the birthplace of the hambuger) or a pizza at Pepe, Sal’s or Modern or shop at Ikea.

If you want to enjoy your dinner stay the hell out of New Haven.

With all of the shootings the city has had recently you could end up on the receiving end of a bullet before your dinner was done through no fault of your own.

besides that why subsidize a liberal pro-amnesty,sanctuary city.Save your money and go somewhere else.

We'll be able to tell who is coming into our town...

Well, isn't that special, coming from a town that rolls out the welcome mat to illegal aliens.

Out with the old Commie mayor, in with the new one.

Special offers might include souvenir shell casings from Dixwell Avenue sidewalks. Just to keep it real.

1. Sally's Apizza is close to Wooster Square. My understanding is that there are gents who take good care of that neighborhood.

2. The card won't make up for the fact that there's no parking around there anyway.

3. There aren't a lot of places in New Haven worth going to. Woolsey Hall has wretched acoustics.

A gift card to spend time in New Haven. That must rank right next to Christmas fruitcake and syphilis on the gift scale.

After checking carefully with “Pinsky,” I and a few pals walked up Elm, Broadway, and Dixwell at 6:45am in the fall of ‘94 with over-unders (Rugers, naturally) over our shoulders en route to the van, and to Ansonia. It was a sort of last moment for Old New Haven - and I am told the “locals” remember it.
