Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), who's said he may vote this month to convict former President Trump on an article of impeachment, is pushing back against possible retaliation from the Nebraska Republican State Central Committee by warning that his party must choose between “conservatism and madness.” Sasse on Thursday released a five-minute video responding to Republican officials back home who want to censure him at a Republican State Central Committee meeting on Feb. 13 because of his criticism of Trump. He warned that purging Trump skeptics from the GOP is “not only civic cancer for the nation [but] just terrible for...

Image screenshot from Youtube video KETV, cropped and scaled by Dean Weingarten There are few Governors who unabashedly support the exercise of Second Amendment rights at protests inside their own state Capitol buildings. Governor Pete Ricketts of Nebraska is one of them.On 12 January 2021, Governor Pete Ricketts gave a press conference about how the Covid19 protective measures. At about 42:11 in the video, a reporter asks about potential “armed protestors” at the Capitol. From Governor Ricketts:So, If people want to protest and bring their guns, obviously open carry is allowed in Nebraska. But I would suggest that everybody remember that...
  • GOP senator on Trump pardons: 'This is rotten to the core'

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) on Wednesday blasted President Trump’s latest pardons of political allies such as former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and political adviser Roger Stone as “rotten to the core.” Sasse issued his statement Wednesday evening, specifically mentioning Manafort and Stone. “This is rotten to the core,” he said in a terse one-liner. The statement by Sasse said that “felons like Manafort and Stone” had “flagrantly and repeatedly violated the law and harmed Americans.” Sasse was the first GOP senator out of the gate to criticize the pardons. Others are likely to follow. Trump also pardoned Charles Kushner,...
  • Nebraska Electors

The closest states for Trump to flip, Arizona (-16K votes), Georgia (-10K) and Wisconsin (-20K) would move the Electoral College to a 269-269 tie, sending the election to the House of Representatives, which Trump should win 26-24 as each state delegation has 1 vote. But the simplest way to decide the election in that case without a vote in the House would be for the unicameral Republican legislature of Nebraska to change the state's electoral delegation back to winner-take-all, giving Trump the elector from the 2nd district and a 270-268 win.
  • Democrats falling short in swing states, early voting statistics show

New early voting data showed Democrats failing to hit their mark in several battleground states, giving Trump campaign officials more reasons for optimism Tuesday as President Trump rallied voters in key Midwestern states and Democrat Joseph R. Biden made a play for traditionally red Georgia. In Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Arizona, Democrats are falling short of their target of 70% of early votes cast either in-person or by mail. That’s the lead they hoped to build up to stave off an expected higher Republican turnout on Election Day.“The Democrats have not opened up a large enough lead in...

On 21 February, 2020, hundreds of Second Amendment supporters showed up at the Nebraska legislature to exercise their First and Second Amendment rights. They were there to stop proposed infringements on the right to keep and bear arms. They were successful. Governor Pete Ricketts tweeted in support of the Second Amendment defenders. In Nebraska, bills are sent to a priority list by individual senators or by being voted on in committee. Because the time the legislature is in session is limited, if a bill does not make it to the list, it is virtually killed off for the year. You...

On August 12, 2019, at about 9:52 p.m., in Omaha, Nebraska, an apartment resident named Mark had some friends visiting him. He heard persistent knocking at the door. It got louder, so he looked out the peephole. Outside, he saw an unknown man at the door with another behind him who had a mask on. He locked the door and went to get his rifle, a Ruger AR 556 (AR-15 clone). In the video, just as he returns, the door is kicked in with a rear spear type kick. As the home invader turns around, he sees the rifle...

Governor Pete Rickets of Nebraska Nebraska's preemption bill has moved forward in a significant way.  Bill LB68 was voted on by the Government Military, and Veterans Affairs committed and passed 33 - 11.  The Nebraska legislature is unicameral, with only 49 members. The committee vote was a vote of the whole legislature, and makes it very likely the legislation will pass.  The Governor, Pete Rickets, claims to strongly support the Second Amendment. His signature seems probable. From theindependent.com: The Legislature voted 32-12 to advance a bill that would require state law to override municipal gun regulations in Nebraska. Supporters...

  • Catholic students celebrate Mass on snow altar while stranded on PA Turnpike

Stranded on buses overnight by a monster snowstorm that has shut down parts of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, hundreds of Catholic high school students from Nebraska and elsewhere nevertheless seemed to have things relatively in hand this afternoon. Returning from Washington D.C., where they took part Friday in the annual March for Life, they at least had food and water on board, said Tim McNeil, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Omaha. A nearby maintenance building gave them access to bathrooms. And while there was nothing resembling a chapel anywhere near the cars, buses and trucks stopped westbound between the Bedford and...
  • Is climate change to blame for the record warmth this Christmas?

Boston Globe Media Partners, LLC ^ | December 21, 2015 | David Epstein
This week, with 60-degree or warmer weather for Christmas Eve lasting into Christmas Day, you may feel a little guilty if you’re enjoying it. You may also be asking yourself if this unseasonal warmth is climate change in action. When the weather gets weird, we often have strong reactions to what’s happening out there. It may seem logical that if, somehow, humans hadn’t spewed trillions of metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere over the past century, we'd have a cold, snowy December as has often been the case in the past. Right? Wrong. This Isn't Climate Change. There...

Some of the same features that kept the Cinema Center building in business for more than 40 years could help make it a success in its next life as a shooting range, investors say. A group of Omaha businessmen plans to convert the vacant central Omaha movie theater into the Omaha Gun Club, which they describe as an upscale, family-friendly, recreational shooting range and firearms retailer.

A young mountain lion had taken up residence under a farm porch in Nebraska.  Nebraska has a growing population of lions.  As with most predators, when the young reach adolescence, they are driven from the territories of their parents.  The choice is stark, the proverbial natural order without food stamps, or magical lemonade springs.  Find their own territory with enough prey animals to kill and eat; or starve.  Most starve. This lion was a bit smaller than most adolescents.  Perhaps its mother had been killed in a fight with another lion, or had been fatally wounded by a deer...
