It depends on which government official you ask. snip... ... In an artist's rendering, the man gazes toward the horizon with a determined stare. The boy's head is upturned, as he looks with pride at his father. The wife? "She's looking pretty beat; she's looking like she's sad," Supervisor Kelly Burk (D-Leesburg) said. Inspired by Loudoun County and other local governments that are considering tougher measures against illegal immigrants, Leesburg town leaders took a look at their policies this week to determine whether they should pursue a similar path. Leesburg Town Council members Ken Reid (R) and Fernando "Marty" Martinez (D) initiated the discussion at the council's work session Monday night. At issue was whether the Leesburg Police Department should collaborate more closely with federal immigration authorities and whether the town could penalize businesses that hire illegal immigrants. Reid said that although illegal immigration is not a major problem in the town, it...

Leesburg Pulls All Civic Signs; Confederate Flag At Center Of Controversy Molly Novotny Jan 12, 2006 -- A Confederate battle flag is not the symbol town staff wanted greeting visitors and residents entering Leesburg. So to ensure the symbol would not adorn the town’s entrance points, town staff removed all civic organization signs from those gateways. Removing all of the signs, to exclude the Sons of Confederate Veterans’ sign legally, has caused frustration among the civic groups, many which have been advertising their clubs’ meetings for a generation. “I belong to several of the organizations that post their signs there,”...

WOULDN’T YOU know? Right after New Hampshire Baseball backed away from its plan to call Manchester’s minor league team the New Hampshire Primaries, the perfect mascot appeared. Or, rather, reappeared. Lyndon LaRouche of Leesburg, Virginia, turned up at the New Hampshire State Library in Concord on Wednesday and announced to the non-waiting world that he is once again a candidate for President of the United States. He is entering the lists as a Democrat and claims to have already raised $5.7 million for his dark horse campaign. LaRouche would have been the ideal mascot of the New Hampshire Primaries for...

Friday, October 17, 2003 Saudi Arabia has funded the indoctrination of U.S. soldiers and inmates to an ideology adopted by Al Qaida. Research conducted by the Washington-based Institute of World Politics has asserted that Saudi Arabia poured tens of millions of dollars into spreading Al Qaida-related ideology among American soldiers and inmates. The report said the Saudi aim was to form insurgency cells throughout the United States that support a Wahabi agenda. "Islamists terrorists view conversions of non-Muslims to Islamism as vital to their effort," J. Michael Waller, a professor at the institute, said. "U.S. counterintelligence is vigilant against recruitment...

Pentagon probes its Muslim school choice WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- A school the Pentagon relied on to train Muslim military chaplains is under investigation for possible ties to al-Qaida, ABC News reported Tuesday. For the last six years, the Pentagon used an unaccredited school in Leesburg, Va., to train and certify most of its 13 Muslim chaplains. But in the last 18 months, the Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences also has been part of a federal investigation into possible financial ties to al-Qaida, ABC reported. One of the chaplains mentioned in correspondence between the Pentagon and the...

The fifth column syndrome (Washington, D.C.): The most traumatic loss the U.S. military has suffered to date in the war with Iraq may, ironically, have been inflicted not by Iraqi Republican Guards, regular army units or irregular "Fedayeen." Rather, it may have come at the hands of an American servicemen. 'Fragged' by One of Our Own Early Sunday morning Kuwait time, a sergeant assigned to an engineering brigade of the 101st Airborne Division allegedly attacked three tents in which many divisional commanding officers were sleeping on the eve of their unit's jump-off into Iraq.
