Army physician Terrence Lakin pleaded guilty Tuesday in a sad mess that shows how some extreme conservatives are repelled by America's first black president. Lt. Col. Lakin acknowledged in a military court-martial that he refused to obey orders to deploy to Afghanistan because he thinks President Obama's Hawaii birth certificate is a fake, thus Obama fails to meet the U.S. Constitution's requirement that each president must be "a natural born citizen." Politics is bizarre. Millions of Americans don't bother to vote, while others care strongly about national leadership -- and a few become so fervent they enter the Twilight Zone....

An Army doctor who disobeyed orders to deploy to Afghanistan because he questioned President Barack Obama's eligibility for office told a jury he was wrong to do so and would now deploy if he could. Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin of Greeley, Colo., was speaking during a court martial hearing Wednesday. Earlier, the jury convicted Lakin of missing a flight that would have gotten him to Fort Campbell, Ky., for his eventual deployment, and Lakin has already pleaded guilty to another charge against him. Lakin gave his statement to the jury before the members decide his eventual punishment.

At the very least, the administration has wasted a huge amount of the nation’s time. At worst, Obama is in fact not eligible to be President. Would that be uncomfortable? Would it be inconvenient? Would it be problematic? Of course. But this nation has survived many traumatic events in its past and would survive this. The Constitution is the supreme law of the land- and it must be upheld.

He can’t handle the truth. At least not while he’s facing the brig. Lt. Col. Terry Lakin of the Army had a motley crew of frustrated Birthers at his court-martial here on Tuesday. The decorated Pentagon doctor from Colorado became the movement’s hero when he went on YouTube in March to brazenly urge President Obama to show “honesty and integrity” by releasing his “original signed birth certificate, if you have one.” He vowed to disobey what he called “illegal orders” to deploy to Afghanistan because he did not regard Obama as a legitimate commander in chief.

Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin pleaded guilty Tuesday to not reporting to Fort Campbell, Ky., for his required deployment to Afghanistan, NBC News reported. Lakin, a doctor and 17-year soldier, believes Obama wasn't born in the United States, and therefore does not meet the constitutional requirements to be president.
