The Western Association of Schools and Colleges has bestowed “initial accreditation” on Zaytuna College, a Muslim institution in Berkeley, California, making it the first accredited Muslim college in the nation. On Thursday, Egyptian security forces detained 73 members of the Muslim Brotherhood, cracking down against the government's most powerful political rival. The arrests occurred in Cairo and the Nile Delta, the main bases of the Islamic movement. Office managers, doctors, engineers, professionals, teachers, and three Brotherhood members of parliament were among those arrested. Foreign Office minister Kim Howells has criticised Muslim leaders for condemning British foreign policy. An open letter, signed by three Muslim MPs, three peers and 38 community groups, said the stance on the Middle East has put civilians at risk. They went on to say that UK policy has given "ammunition to extremists".
